19 School Positions Eliminated, One Greatly Reduced

Westlake Superintendent of Schools Dan Keenan provided a detailed list that amount to $930,000 of cuts to the district. The cuts are the result of the recently failed 5.9 - mill levy in May. 

"The reduction plan takes into account input from the last Board meeting and any that has been given since, our mission, our Continuous Improvement and input from our administrative team," Keenan said by email. 

Administrative, teaching and classified positions will all be part of the reductions. A total of 20 positions will be impacted. Nineteen positions will be eliminated and one position will be greatly reduced.  

Nine of the positions eliminated are teaching positions impacting programming and class size. 

"The nine teaching positions will not result in a layoff because of retirements," Keenan said. "We will not be replacing nine teaching positions."

The district has: 

• Reduced pre-school supervisor position to a 33% position
• Eliminated 1 summer school principal
• 1 secondary gifted coordinator that was added through grant funding – grant exhausted and won’t use general fund to restore
• 3 elementary positions
• 1.5 special education positions,
• 1 high school social studies position,
• 1 family and consumer science position(eliminates this program)
• 1 art position
• .5 physical education position
• .5 HS gifted position
• .5 guidance position
• 6 bus driver positions
• 1 teacher assistant position,
• 1 LBMS supervisor position

Also announced at the June 10 Board of Education meeting , $143,000 of reductions will be made in budgets for field trips, technology, equipment, summer help for cleaning, and supplies.

Students living within a mile radius of the schools will no longer be bused.
