Whiz Kid: Danny Gibel

This fantastic first grader is helping around the house, fighting cancer and aspiring to be just like his dad.

Whiz Kid: Danny Gibel  School: St. Bernadette Elementary School, first grade,  Mrs. Chinchar’s class Accomplishments: Danny doesn’t mind helping out at home by doing his chores or helping his dad around the house on various projects. He also helps those in need without being asked. “I help people when I see they are hurt or sad,” he said. “I try to help my mom at home with my younger brothers and sister. I make my bed and clear off the table every day." Danny said he also puts away his clothes and cleans his room, but that's not his favorite way to help out. "My favorite way to help out at home is working with my dad on projects around the house and in the yard,”  he said. Key to Awesomeness: Danny works hard and sticks to his routines to …

Whiz Kid: Grace Moley

This St. Bernadette third grader has goals to support cancer research, and enjoys arts and athletics.

Whiz Kid: Grace Moley School: St. Bernadette School, 3rd grade Teacher: Miss Anders Accomplishments: Grace Moley earns high grades with a natural ability and an eagerness to learn. She enjoys her time at school, putting effort into academics as well as athletics. She recognizes that her natural abilities in certain subjects are helpful. "I love gym," she said. "It’s a break from studying. I also love phonics and spelling.  I am lucky that they are easy for me." Though some of her successes come easy, she isn’t resting on her laurels. Grace works through both easy and more difficult subjects with focus and determination. "I study hard at home and I try to do what my teacher and parents ask of me," Grace said. Whiz Kid: Megan Lindholm School: Westlake High School, freshman Accomplishments:  Megan maintains excellent grades and has been on the high honor roll all year. Her academic excellence doesn't come without work though. "(I get good grades) by being prepared, doing my best and completing the assignments," she said.  Megan added that students shouldn't be afraid to ask for help if they don't understand the material. Whiz Kid: Jason Labroo  School: Westlake High School, senior  Accomplishments:  Jason has accomplished much in the way of basketball in both his junior and senior years, being named team captain and MVP as well as receiving several awards including the Coaches Award and First Place Bank Student Athlete Award. He has also been recognized for his talents on the school baseball team. Academically, Jason is a member of the National Honor Society and maintains a spot on the high honor roll because of his excellent grades. Whiz Kid: Barbara Bobal

Westlake kids do amazing things every day, and each week at Westlake Patch, we're going to be featuring child, teenager, club or team that really shines.

Whiz Kid: Barbara Bobal School: Westlake High School, freshman Accomplishments: Barbara has been a Youth Challenge volunteer for two years; helping out with various community causes during the school year and even during summer break. She participates in Key Club, Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD), the golf and track teams and is an aid in the Good Shephard program at St. Ladislas Catholic Church, where she is also an altar server. In addition, Barbara consistently makes the honor roll for her excellent grades. "I have also earned many medals in Irish dance competitions," she said. Whiz Kid: Hannah Sommers

This Westlake High School freshman loves horses, film and playing the saxophone.

Whiz Kid: Hannah Sommers School: Westlake High School, freshman Accomplishments: Sommers consistently makes the high honor roll at WHS, so the ninth grader is definitely on her way to a fruitful high school career. "I don't slack off," Hannah said. "I try to makes sure I get all my homework done for the day ahead and not to put it off and procrastinate." Whiz Kid: William Witalis School: St. Bernadette Elementary School, first grade Teacher: Mrs. Foster Accomplishments William got straight As on his last report card and received recognition for his incredible achievements in reading. "This was rewarding because I did not know how to read when I started kindergarten," he said. William also recently took home a prize for his Cub Scout troop's Pinewood Derby race. He now has two fresh patches to add to his Cub Scout uniform: the tiger and bobcat. William said that he maintains good grades in school by studying hard, paying attention and always trying to do his best. "I'm a quick learner," he said. "I excel at many things." This week's Whiz Kid is a senior at Westlake High School and a member of the National Honors Society.

Whiz Kid: Madison Caja School: Westlake High School, senior Accomplishments: Caja was recognized as this year's Scholar Athlete. She plays on the Westlake High School girls' basketball team and consistently makes the high honor roll. How does she get such good grades in high school while managing her extracurriculars? Whiz Kid: Ben Sposet

From geography bees to music programs, this Westlake sixth grader has champion written all over him.

Westlake kids do amazing things every day, and each week at Westlake Patch, we're going to be featuring child, teenager, club or team that really shines. Whiz Kid: Benjamin Sposet Age: 12 School: Parkside Intermediate, 6th Grade Accomplishments: Benjamin won Parkside Intermediate School's geography bee in January and is headed to the state competition later this year, and he was also recognized at a state level for his self-composed musical pieces for his school's "Reflections" program. In addition, Ben's Lego Olympiad team won the Solution Award for the project they'd entered in to the competition while he took home the People's Choice award.  "In the Science Olympiad, I won first in science trivia and second in aerodynamics," he added. …
