Robert A, Gottschalk, 89, of Westlake, passed away on May 17, 2013. He passed away on May 17, 2013. Robert was the beloved husband of Janice Gottschalk (nee Ebner). He was the dear father of Dale Gottschalk (JoAnn), Greg Gottschalk and Dawn Foerster (James); fond grandfather of Kirk, Lisa, Wade and Gretchen and great grandfather of Kai, Hailey, Lorelei and Kami. Brother of Franics Gottschalk and Barbara Paulitzky. Friends and family will gather from 2 p.m. - 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. - 8 p.m. on Tuesday, May 21 at Jenkins Funeral Chapel, 2914 Dover Center Road, Westlake. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Wednesday, May 22 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Bernadette Church, 2256 Clague Road, Westlake. Interment is at Holy Cross Cemetery. In lieu of …

Pair released to sober friend.
A 34-year-old North Olmsted man could have used better judgment May 11 when he went to bail out a friend who had been arrested for operating under the influence earlier that morning. The man arrived at the police station just after 4 a.m. Westlake police found him to be under the influence and he was arrested for drunk driving as well. Police subsequently determined that he had been drinking with the woman before her arrest. He had also been using medicine prescribed to him. Both were later released to a sober friend. Also in the blotters: A Pennsylvania man visiting this area had his 1999 Acura Integra stolen from a Westford Circle residence on the night of May 6. Four men allegedly stole an ATM machine from a BP station.
UPDATE: The Chevy Astro van in question was recovered burned out on Woodstock Avenue in Cleveland on May 15. It had been stolen in Cleveland in March. The license plate on it was stolen the night before the burglary. ---------- Do you recognize this van? A substantial amount of money—and an ATM were taken from the BP station at the intersection of Columbia and Detroit roads last week. An employee arriving for work at the gas station at 4:53 a.m. on May 7 discovered the break in. A close captioned television showed that at 4:12 a.m. four masked suspects drove a full-size van (tan or cream with red or brown horizontal stripes, older, conversion style with running boards) into the plate glass window and stole a Chase ATM. Elementary school positions, consumer science program will be eliminated.
Superintendent of Schools Dr. Dan Keenan laid out a tentative plan for $1 million in cuts following the school levy loss last Tuesday. “We’re doing this because we can’t count on money coming in in January; we’re at the end of the levy cycle,” Keenan said. With no new money coming in, the district, at current expenditures, would be $2.9 million in the red by the 2014-15 school year. The cuts, announced at the May 13 school board meeting, will go into effect for the 2013-14 school year. Cuts include: Keenan said other cuts and reductions are probable. “This follows the $4.2 million in cuts we made in 2010,” Keenan said. At that time, operations were heavily cut. Westlake grad competed in Lima, Peru this past weekend.
Sheldon Stuckart, a member of Team USA Weightlifting, placed 12th in the Junior Worlds in his first time out, competing in the 85kg session. He represented the USA at the Junior Worlds in Lima, Peru last week, finishing with a 283 kg total. According to the Team USA website, competing in his first international competition, lifted in the Junior World Championships 85 kg B session May 8. Stuckart, a 2011 Westlake High School graduate opened with a successful 125 kg snatch, missed 130 kg on his second attempt and then made the same weight on his third. In the clean & jerk, Stuckart opened with a successful 153 kg, moved up to 158 kg on his second, but was turned down due to press out, then missed his third with 160kg, cleaning the weight …

A group of entrepreneurial Parkside students is raising the bar from an initial $50 profit in 2012 to $5,000 for this year's Relay for Life. Lots In One, a Westlake Relay for Life team made up of fifth- and sixth-grade students from Parkside Intermediate School, is working hard to raise money for the American Cancer Society. The group of 11 and 12-year-olds have a full agenda scheduled leading up to the Westlake Relay for Life on July 13 at the Westlake Recreation Center. The team will be walking in Westlake’s Memorial Day Parade on May 27 and hold a major fundraiser on June 1 before the July 13 event. Team members set a big goal for themselves, a whopping $5,000. A 14-year-old Westlake boy had a scare May 6. At approximately 4 p.m. the driver of a smaller, newer silver car (possibly an American make) pulled up and stopped behind the teen as he walked on North Bay Drive. The white male was described as late 50s, heavy-set, 5'10"-6' tall, wearing glasses, moustache and a soul patch (a tuft of hair under lower lip) with medium length white hair combed straight back, wearing a red Cleveland Indians shirt, faded blue jeans and white tennis shoes with black toes. One other comment, I moved my family into this city in 2010. We lived in Parma, they couldn't pass a levy and the teaching was at state minimum level. We were only looking at two cities - Westlake and Independence to move. Why? Because they did not mess around with the schools.
