Mr. and Mrs. Westlake Recount City's Rich Past

Roger and Lollie Cooley will be joined by Westlake historian Will Krause at Porter Public Library March 28.

On March 28, Westlake Porter Public Library will host the second part of "An Interview with Roger and Lollie Cooley." The oral history program will focus on the Dover Center/Center Ridge area of Westlake, and will be presented as a discussion between Mr. & Mrs. Westlake 2007, Roger and Lollie Cooley, and city historian Will Krause, according to westlakelibrary.org. Westlake Library Volunteer Wins Coveted Myrna Chelko Award

The Myrna Chelko award is given annually to the library volunteer whose efforts have made an impact on Westlake Porter Public Library services.

Nancy Shaw has received the 2012 Myrna Chelko award, which is given annually to a volunteer whose efforts have made an impact on library services. "The award is named for the late Myrna Chelko, whose contributions to the library epitomized the spirit of volunteerism," said Westlake Porter Public Library Public Relations Specialist Elaine Willis. In 2012, Shaw gave nearly 160 hours to the library, and has served for a total of 1,842 hours since 2002, said Willis. Shaw received the award at the annual Volunteer recognition reception on March 3 at the library. “Volunteers enable us to provide services to the community that we wouldn’t otherwise be able to provide,” said Library Director Andrew Mangels. “We cannot thank them enough for their …

Rep. Renacci’s Staff Holding Mobile Office in Westlake Today

Jim Renacci’s staff will be at the Westlake Porter Public Library to answer questions.

Do you have a question you’d like to ask U.S. Rep. Jim Renacci’s staff? If you said yes, make some time this afternoon to stop by the Westlake Porter Public Library. Renacci’s staff is holding a mobile office there from 12 until 2 p.m.  According to a press release from Renacci’s office, there will be staff members available who can talk about a variety of issues, from Social Security to veterans’ affairs to the IRS. Renacci will not personally be in attendance. For more details, check out this event post.

Picc-A-Deli Café at the Library Closing

The café’s library location will be closed as of Friday.

The Picc-A-Deli at Porter Café is closing as of Feb. 1, according to a message posted on the Westlake Porter Public Library’s website.  The café is located inside the library and offers coffee, pastries and lunch items. Picc-A-Deli also has a main location at 25022 Center Ridge Road, but that business’ future is not clear. The library’s message says that the main business will be closing, too, but the West Shore Sun reports that the location will remain open for the time being. There is no information on Picc-A-Deli’s website, and the owners could not be reached on Thursday afternoon. The library board will choose another use for the space currently occupied by the café. This could include finding another vendor, according to the library's…

Cathy Schultz Receives Library Award for Years of Volunteer Work

The Westlake resident was selected for the 2012 Myrna Chelko Volunteer Award.

Westlake resident Cathy Schultz has received the 2012 Myrna Chelko Volunteer Award from Westlake Porter Public Library. The award was announced at the annual Volunteer Award Recognition reception. It is named for the late Myrna Chelko, and is given to the volunteer who epitomizes the spirit of volunteerism as demonstrated by Chelko during her years as a library volunteer. Schultz was selected as this year’s recipient in recognition of her years as a Friends of Porter Public Library Board member, the number of volunteer responsibilities she has taken on over the years, and her dedication and enthusiasm. Schultz first joined the Friends of Porter Library’s board of trustees in 1993. Since then she has held a variety of offices and …

Library Book Sale Features Signed Harry Potter Book

The big sale includes over 10,000 new and used items.

This year's Westlake Porter Public Library annual Book Sale features a signed copy of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, thousands of other books, DVDs and a silent auction for some special items, said Friends of Porter Public Library's Jennifer Cirincione. The sale starts with a Friends of the Library preview from 4 to 7 p.m. Feb. 1. Anyone who joins the friends group that day will be eligible to shop early. The sale continues from 9:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Feb. 2 and 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Feb. 3 and 4.  Everything will be half-price on Feb. 4, and the final $2 bag sale wraps up the annual event from 1:15 to 4:30 p.m. Feb. 5.

Demons Basketball The Westlake High School boys basketball team will take on North Ridgeville in the WHS gym at 7 p.m. Tuesday night. The Demons are on a winning streak, and undefeated in the Southwest Conference. Superhero Storytime Kids ages 3 to 6 can dress up as their favorite comic book character, and listen to stories about what made thse heroes super at 7 p.m. at Westlake Porter Public Library. Learn To Use An E-Reader At Porter Public

The library is offering several classes and troubleshooting sessions.

Did you get a new gadget over the holidays, but aren't quite sure how to use it? Westlake Porter Public Library can help with their e-reader classes and  troubleshooting sessions. The library is only offering a limited number of one-hour appointments for those who need a lot of help. To set up one for yourself, call Popular Materials at 440-250-5462. If you want to learn the basics of downloading, Porter Public will be offering a class for almost every device. All classes will be held in the Computer Training/PC Lab.
