Take your favorite magazines with you
Like magazines, but don't want them cluttering your coffee table? Westlake Porter Public Library has a solution. The library is now offering e-magazines through Zinio at the library's website. Users can download and view the magazines on their computer, smartphone or tablet. The Zinio app is available for iPhone, iPad, Kindle Fire, Blackberry Player and Android. There are currently 79 magazines available, including Consumer Reports, Esquire, Martha Stewart Living, ESPN The Magazine, Every Day with Rachael Ray, Rolling Stone and O, The Oprah Magazine. Organization started by Westlake mom for parents of children with developmental delays will hold more events at Westlake Porter Library
Sarah Rintamaki started Connecting For Kids after feeling alone and frustrated trying to find support for dealing with her children's speech and developmental delays. Now, she's definitely not alone. Connecting For Kids and Westlake Porter Library have been awarded $33,000 in grants to provide support, resources and education for parents of children with developmental issues including autism, ADHD, Asperger's, anxiety issues, speech delays, and sensory processing disorders, as well as developmental issues that don't have a definite diagnosis. A $23,000 grant from the Cleveland Foundation, given to the library, will pay for parent discussion groups, music therapy, playtime and storytime. All of these are free of charge. Westlake Porter Public Library was closing at 3 p.m. Wednesday, library staff announced just after 2 p.m.. A statement from the library asked residents planning to come to the library on Thursday to call 440-871-2600 to check that it is open. As of 2:20 p.m., the Westlake Recreation Center remained open and had no plans to close early. Does your business, church or organization have a weather-related cancellation or closing? The new book, The Casual Vacancy, is to be released Sept. 27
There may be no more Harry Potter books, but author J.K. Rowling is still writing. Her new book, The Casual Vacancy, is set not in the land of wizards but among ordinary muggles. And it's a novel for grown-ups. More than 2 million hardcover copies of her first novel are set to be released simultaneously in the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Germany. You can buy it in Westlake at Barnes & Noble. Westlake Porter Library will have the book starting Sept. 27, said Elaine Willis, public relations associate for the library. Don Cockroft will talk about his new book about the Browns' Kardiac Kids season
Red Right 88. Those words make Cleveland Browns fans wince 30 years later. A Browns player who was witness to all the highs and lows of the Kardiac Kids era will be at Westlake Porter Library on Sept. 25, talking about his new book about that time. Don Cockroft, who was a punter and placekicker for the Browns, will come to the library to discuss his book, 1980 Kardiac Kids: Our Untold Stories. Cockroft will sign copies of the book from 6 to 6:45 p.m., and again after his 7 p.m. talk. Cockroft was the Browns' placekicker for 13 seasons and punter for nine. It was in his final season, 1980, that the Browns had their Kardiac Kids season that came to a crushing end with the infamous Red Right 88 play in the AFC playoffs against the eventual …

Jim Axelrod to talk about his new book, "In the Long Run."
Former CBS News chief White House correspondent Jim Axelrod is coming to Westlake to talk about his new book. Axelrod will be at the Performing Arts Center at Westlake High School at 7 p.m. Sept. 8. He will talk about his book, In the Long Run, and will also sign copies of the book. There will be books available for purchase at the Performing Arts Center. Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. The appearance by Axelrod is a joint effort by Westlake Porter Library, Westlake City Schools and St. John Medical Center. In the Long Run is about Axelrod's quest to not only run the 2009 New York City Marathon, but to beat his late father's time in the race. Egg drop is a fun -- and messy -- way to learn science
Summer vacation comes to a close for Westlake children this week, as Westlake City Schools start classes on Thursday. Westlake Porter Library helped some parents with the transition from summer to school with Science Week, which featured several activities that mixed learning and fun. Activities ranged from a visit by animals from Lake Erie Nature and Science Center, learning about robots, and chances to experiment from everything from electronics to building structures out of toothpicks and marshmallows. It's Science Week at Westlake Porter Library. The fun starts Monday as Lake Erie Nature and Science Center bring wild animals for kids to see up-close. There are other fun science-based events each day, designed to fit Westlake City Schools' S.T.E.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) objectives in its curriculum. New interactive feature honors library supporters
Westlake Porter Library went high-tech when it created a display to honor donors to the library. The donor wall in the front lobby, which was unveiled Monday as part of the celebrations honoring the 10th anniversary of the current building, features an interactive touchscreen with information on all kinds of donors and donations. "Donors are very important to the library," said library Board of Trustees president John Weedon. "Their donations allow us to fulfill our mission and do what we are supposed to do even in difficult financial times." The top donor listed was Leonard Porter, whose $1,000 bequest and the donation of his book collection in 1884 started the library. It's not just people who gave money who are listed, said library …
