Daniel Jung, the Westlake man who ran over and killed his father and injured his mother in 2004, is accused of setting fire to the garage of his brother's Woodpath Trail home Thursday morning. Jung, 30, was taken to St. John Medical Center after threatening to kill himself, then was taken to Westlake City Jail Thursday afternoon. He is being charged with aggravated arson. A neighbor who called 911 shortly before 10:30 a.m. told the dispatcher she had seen Jung pouring what looked to be gasoline around the front of the house near the garage and was holding a lighter. Edmund Geiger, Former Westlake Fire Chief, Dies

Geiger brought new programs and equipment to Westlake Fire Department

Edmund Geiger, 86, former chief of the Westlake Fire Department, died Oct. 20. During his tenure as fire chief from 1958 to 1979, Geiger oversaw the rapid growth of the Fire Department. When Geiger began as chief, there were three full-time firefighters. When he retired, the department had 25 full-time firefighters and paramedics. He began the Fire Prevention Week program with children, to teach fire safety. Geiger began the department's fire inspections of businesses and public buildings. During his tenure, he also brought in the city's first new fire engine in 1960, the first ambulance in the mid-1960s, the first aeriel apparatus in 1974 and hired the city's first paramedics. Think Safety During National Fire Prevention Week

Westlake assistant fire chief gives tips for protecting your home and family

This is National Fire Prevention Week, and, with the cooler weather moving us indoors, it's a good time to assess fire safety in our homes. Nationwide, there were 369,500 residential fires in 2010, the National Fire Protection Association reported. According to the NFPA, 13,350 people (not including firefighters) were injured, and 2,640 were killed. Those fires caused $6.9 billion in damage. Westlake has been lucky the past few years. Between January of 2010 and January of 2012, there have been 53 residential fires. Most were small, said Westlake Fire Department assistant fire chief Jim Hughes. Music teacher and Westlake United Methodist Church choir director Kevin Foster, 36, was arrested and charged with providing alcohol to two underaged young women who were students in his private music teaching business. Westlake Police are investigating other relationships Foster may have had with students. Fire Department Gets Kiwanis Funds for Equipment

Money will be used to buy child-sized restraint boards

In the grand scheme of things in municipal spending, $1,000 may not sound like much. But it's making a difference for the Westlake Fire Department. A $1,000 grant made to Westlake Kiwanis from Kiwanis International will be used by the Fire Department to buy four child restraint devices for the gurneys in its ambulances. Westlake Kiwanis president Rick Grane found out in August that the grant had been awarded to Westlake Kiwanis. On Tuesday, he was able to present the check to Westlake assistant fire chief Jim Hughes. "A lot of people think of Kiwanis and they think pancake breakfasts, and community service," said Grane. Fire Hydrants Around Westlake Being Flushed

Keep an eye on your faucets, flushing may affect your water

The Westlake Fire Department are flushing the city fire hydrants throughout September. That could affect some residents' water. Your water could become cloudy or dusty when a hydrant nearby is being flushed. If that happens, run cold water at the lowest faucet of your home until its clear. The cloudy water could also stain clothes when they're being washed. If that happens to you, call the Fire Department at 440-871-3441 to get rust/stain remover.

Kiwanis Grant to Help Fire Department Help Kids

Grant awarded to Westlake Kiwanis will buy equipment to safely transport sick or injured children

Children needing an ambulance in Westlake will soon be transported even more safely, thanks to a grant secured by Westlake Kiwanis. The grant is for $1,000 from Kiwanis International. It will be used to buy at least three Pedi-Mate restraint systems, which help keep children secure on a gurney when they're being taken to the hospital in an ambulance, for Westlake Fire Department. "Kids can slide and roll around when they're on a gurney," said Westlake Kiwanis president Rick Grane. "They can even fall off. This will keep them safe so they won't hurt themselves further."
