Nationwide, gas prices were predicted to be lower this summer compared to the last three years, but that won't translate into savings at the pump this Memorial Day weekend, experts said. "Motorists this year are facing rising gas prices heading into the Memorial Day holiday," Michael Green, a AAA spokesman, said adding that Memorial Day 2013 would probably be the most expensive since 2011. Safety Town Registration Now Open

First come, first serve.

  Preparation for the 2013 Westlake Safety Town is now underway. Registration is now open to all children entering kindergarten in the fall who would like to attend. Please pick up applications at the Westlake Police Station (27300 Hilliard Blvd.) located at the intersection with Dover Center Rd. (behind the Board of Education). Safety Town is located at the Safety Town Pavilion at the Police Station. Cash or a check made payable to the City of Westlake ($20 residents and $25 non-residents) must accompany your application. The first two-week session starts June 10.    Class size is limited and enrollment is first come, first serve.  Return your applications with payment as soon as possible to insure getting your first choice of sessions.

Teen Breaks Into Father’s Home, Drops Beer, Gets Arrested

Also...drunk woman won't leave Detroit Road restaurant.

A Lincoln Road man came home and saw his non-custodial 14-year-old son and two unknown females run from his house on May 15 at 5:31 p.m. They were dropping cans of beer as they fled. The father found an attempted entry through a window and also that the garage pedestrian door had been kicked in. The son was arrested the next day for burglary. He was later released to his custodial grandmother. Also in the blotters A 38-year-old Westlake woman got herself banned from a Detroit Road restaurant for being too drunk May 13. She was told to leave by staff and refused. Westlake police responded and found that she also had an active Westlake Police Department warrant for a probation violation, so she was arrested for that as well as drunk and …

After 27 Years, Westake Raising Sewer Rates

Single homes will increase to $40 per quarter, two families to $50.

For the first time in 27 years Westlake sewer rates are increasing. “We haven’t had a sewer increase since 1986,” Council President Michael Killeen said last week. “It’s the cost of providing the service.” Four categories will see an increase. Single-family homes will increase to $40 a quarter. Two -family homes will increase to $50 per quarter and apartment and industrial will increase to $17.50 per quarter based on water usage. Even with the increase, the cost for apartments is still below the 1985 cost. According to the ordinance passed on May 16, The Commercial/Industrial rate will be on a per MCF basis of water consumption but not less than the single-family quarterly rate. YMCA Starts West Side Autism Support Group

Group will meet the first Saturday of every month; will serve west side of Cleveland.

In 2012 the YMCA surveyed members and found that families affected by Autism were in need of support. The staff at the French Creek Family YMCA answered the call with the development of their own Autism Support Group, the only group of its kind on the west side of Cleveland.  “After speaking with many families who were impacted by Autism, I did some research and found there to be more options east of Cleveland, but choices were very limited in our area,” Kristin Pullin, Membership Service Director for the French Creek Family YMCA, said. “It was a service we thought we could provide to both our members and the community.” This peer-led group meets the first Saturday of each month from 9:30 a.m. 10:30 a.m. and is open to members of both the …

Westlake Novelist Eyeing Publication Prize for Children's Novel

An aspiring Westlake author has found himself on a short list of finalists in a children’s book contest and you can help him get his first novel published. David Simon, who works as a creative director for Rosenberg Advertising in Lakewood, is a finalist in the CBAY Books competition in the Middle Grade Finalists category for his entry, Trapped in Lunch Lady Land. The 30,000-word novel actually started as a much shorter item. “It started out as a picture book and then a chapter book,” Simon, who created the illustrations, said. “I sent the picture book to the contest and they chose me as a finalist and asked me to extend it to a full-fledged novel.” The result is a story about Josh and Patty Anne, two students who detest each other. Westlake Couple Loses 200 Pounds, Runs Cleveland Half Marathon

Jason and Callista Puchmeyer shared their story with our partners at WEWS News Channel 5.

At one point, while pregnant, Callista Puchmeyer weighed 359 pounds. Her husband, Jason, weighed 300 pounds. Now the Westlake couple has lost a combined 200 pounds and ran in the Rite-Aid Cleveland half marathon Sunday, according to our partners at WEWS News Channel 5. "I used the couch to 5k running plan that a lot of people use," Callista said. "But also incorporated some strength training." Her success motivated Jason to start his own workout plan. The couple now works out six times a week. They've been training for the Cleveland half marathon for months. Their main motivation, being able to keep up with their children, ages six and under. The following awards were presented: OHSAA State Award for Sportsmanship, Ethics and Integrity: Cathy Axcell This award is given to a person within the school or community who continually exemplifies good sportsmanship, a person who is a positive role model for others, a person who reflects a high level of ethics and integrity in dealing with students and the interscholastic athletic program, a person who supports and demonstrates positive values and a person who has contributed to the well-being of the youth of our high school.
