Staff members don't want their peers to feel forgotten.
Hilliard Elementary School staff members didn't want their peers at Chardon High School to be forgotten. Following the tragic Feb. 27 shooting, Hilliard secretaries, custodians, food service workers, teachers and assistants all wrote a letter of support to their counterparts at Chardon High School. Hilliard art teacher Will Wilson painted a black and red ribbon and a Chardon “C” on a box that the Hilliard Elementary PTA will mail to Chardon as part of a joint effort. “We wanted to delay delivering these at the forefront because it is often harder later after the tragedy, when the support trails off, you feel forgotten,” said Hilliard Elementary Principal Kim Conley. “I am very proud of the Hilliard staff and the support of the PTA.” The …

The school raised enough money to buy 9,503 meals.
Hilliard Elementary School students and staff pitched in to raise $2,375.78 and 170 pounds of food during the school’s 10th Harvest for Hunger campaign. All together, the money raised will buy 9,503 meals. Because the campaign, organized by intervention specialist Kathy Nash and second-grade teacher Jane Zellers, reached its goal of $1,500, students will be rewarded with a pajama day and sustained silent reading in a room of their choice. Since 2002, Hilliard has collected $31,198.54 and 3,304 pounds of food for Harvest for Hunger.

The two schools join only a dozen others in the state up for the award.
Bassett and Hilliard elementary schools are standing out among Ohio's primary schools. The state has nominated the two schools for the 2012 National Blue Ribbon Schools award, along with only a dozen others. Both schools were among the highest-performing schools on state assessments, received the top score of Excellent on their state report cards, and earned a Performance Index Score of over 110. The school principals were thrilled with the news, and credited their predecessors for laying the ground work that made the schools so successful. “The staff at Bassett is humbled by this recognition,” said Bassett Principal Ben Hodge. “Former Principal Tim Rickard created a learning community that achieves excellence, and I want to continue that …

Westlake City School administrators and educators will work through the summer and into 2012 to prepare the district's application for candidacy.
By 2014, the curricula taught in Westlake’s elementary schools will undergo quite a transformation as administrators and teachers are in the process of planning and developing an International Baccalaureate (IB) program that will be aligned with the district’s continuous improvement plan. Bassett principal Ben Hodge, curriculum director Pam Griebel, and IB coordinators Deb Wadden and Colleen Steidel will be helping to position Bassett – along with Dover, Hilliard and Holly Lane Elementary Schools – to take on this scholastic feat. Why 2014? Good question. It’s because IB isn’t any ordinary program. Administrators and teachers have to develop new lesson plans that abide by IB’s strict educational guidelines that require each student to …
