Long Ago Westlake: Bassett Elementary's First Day of School

This photo is from the inaugural day of Bassett Elementary school in 1968

In a new feature, we'll be periodically sharing photos of Westlake's past. This week, we're featuring a photo of the then-brand new Bassett Elementary School's first day of school, courtesy of ClevelandMemory.com. According to Cleveland Memory, this photo, taken on Jan. 4, 1968, is of first graders' first day of school "at the new Bassett Elementary School in Westlake. "This is the first grade room of Mrs. Virginia Royer. The building has seven teaching stations but has been designed so that future additions will triple its size and potential enrollment. Bassett, Hilliard Named Blue-Ribbon Schools

Two Westlake elementary schools win national honor

Westlake City Schools earned a big honor on Monday as Bassett and Hilliard Elementary Schools were named winners of the 2012 National Blue Ribbon Schools Award. They are two of only 13 schools in Ohio to earn the honor, which is given by the U.S. Department of Education. Both Bassett and Hilliard were among the top schools in state assessments, received the top score of Excellent on their state report cards, and earned a high Performance Index Scores.  Bassett earned the top score of Excellent on the most recent state report card and a Performance Index Score of 110.4, which reflects the achievement of every student. With Westlake City Schools opening early this year, back-to-school shopping is a bit more rushed for Westlake parents. So, we're here to help. Hilliard, Bassett Elementary Nominated As Blue Ribbon Schools

The two schools join only a dozen others in the state up for the award.

Bassett and Hilliard elementary schools are standing out among Ohio's primary schools. The state has nominated the two schools for the 2012 National Blue Ribbon Schools award, along with only a dozen others. Both schools were among the highest-performing schools on state assessments, received the top score of Excellent on their state report cards, and earned a Performance Index Score of over 110. Teacher Feature: International Baccalaureate Program Coming to Westlake in 2014

Westlake City School administrators and educators will work through the summer and into 2012 to prepare the district's application for candidacy.

By 2014, the curricula taught in Westlake’s elementary schools will undergo quite a transformation as administrators and teachers are in the process of planning and developing an International Baccalaureate (IB) program that will be aligned with the district’s continuous improvement plan.  Bassett principal Ben Hodge, curriculum director Pam Griebel, and IB coordinators Deb Wadden and Colleen Steidel will be helping to position Bassett – along with Dover, Hilliard and Holly Lane Elementary Schools – to take on this scholastic feat.  Why 2014? Good question. Whiz Kid: Christopher Elliott, 10 School: Bassett Elementary   Teacher: Mrs. Thrasher  Accomplishments: Christopher is taking part in a country-wide math contest called "First in Math" by Suntex. The program provides friendly incentives for kids to preen their math skills and helps them to score well on standardized tests.
