Former Westlake Soldier Who Killed Himself Was Suspect in Thefts

Investigation is ongoing

A man who fatally shot himself on Jan. 31 in Granger Township was recently identified as 27-year-old Andrew Baumgartner, a Westlake resident who served in Afghanistan and the Persian Gulf. Baumgartner was a suspect in a Cleveland Heights burlary and was suspected of break-ins elsewhere in Cuyahoga County. “His parents still live in Westlake and his license listed a Westlake address,” Det. Jim Cartwrtight of the Medina Sheriff’s office said. Baumgartner was living in Sagamore Hills at the time of his death. Baumgartner's burial is scheduled for Feb. 6. Baumgartner age 27, of Westlake, passed away on Feb. 1, 2013. He was born on Feb. 12, 1985. He was born in Mayfield Heights. He was the beloved son of Richard and Gay, dear brother of Allan (Pat), Denise, Tracy Byrne (Patrick), Kelly Ralston (Christopher) and Candice. He was the grandson of Joseph and Blanche DeSalvo and Adolf and Frieda Baumgartner and uncle of Ian, Bailey, Patrick, Thomas, Zachary, Lucas, Joseph, Marissa and Alec.
