Andrea Rocco appointed interim Clerk since Jan. 2
Former Westlake School Board member Andrea Rocco has been appointed by Cuyahoga County Executive Ed FitzGerald as the new Cuyahoga County Clerk of Courts. Rocco was appointed the interim Clerk of Courts on Jan. 2 after longtime Clerk Gerald Fuerst retired in December. Rocco, an attorney, has worked as the prosecutor and assistant director of law in Westlake since 2002. Previously she worked as an assistant to the Ohio Attorney General's office. Rocco stepped down from her longtime position as a school board member in January 2012 due to her position as special counsel to Cuyahoga County Executive Ed FitzGerald. Rocco has been a board member for more than 10 years after her appointment to a vacant seat in 2001. In 2002 and 2005, she was …

Those interested in serving can find the application on the district website.
Longtime Westlake School Board member Andrea Rocco announced Monday that she will be stepping down from her seat, due to her new position as special counsel to Cuyahoga County Executive Ed FitzGerald. Rocco has been a board member for more than 10 years after her appointment to a vacant seat in 2001. In 2002 and 2005, she was elected vice president, and served as president in 2008 and 2009. Superintendent Dan Keenan asked Rocco to consider staying on the board through the next phase of schools construction and to plan for the 2012-13 school year budget. “As a result of County Executive FitzGerald’s policy that county cabinet employees not hold public office, I regrettably have to resign from my school board seat,” Rocco said in a statement…

Members debate spending in the district and projected deficits.
The Westlake School Board was divided over finances again on Monday night as members debated the approval of the district’s five-year forecast. The forecast, required by the state of Ohio, projects spending through the year 2016 based on assumptions made today. Treasurer Mark Pepera said that while the district is projecting a large deficit by the year 2016, those numbers will change. “We’re doing well with conservative budgeting,” he said. “[The deficit levels] legitimately can’t materialize to the level you’re seeing.” The forecast shows a deficit of $27.5 million in five years, roughly half of the district’s budget. “Logically, that can’t happen because we can’t operate that way,” Pepera said. Board members Nate Cross and Tim Sullivan …

Andrea Rocco will act as special counsel to County Executive Ed FitzGerald.
Westlake school board member Andrea Rocco is joining the Cuyahoga County administration as special counsel to County Executive Ed FitzGerald. “I am excited to work with Ed FitzGerald and to contribute the success he’s had so far,” Rocco said. “I am looking forward to working with the county." Rocco will keep her position as a municipal prosecutor in the law department, but will be leaving her post as assistant to the mayor in Lakewood. FitzGerald said he knew Rocco’s skills well— he hired the guy who hired her in 2008. “It’s her work ethic and determination— these are the qualities that a government needs," FitzGerald said. "We’re trying to bring that to Cuyahoga County government.” Rocco will earn approximately $48,000 in her new part-…

Board members and district administrators look to negotiate with teachers' union to lower or freeze salaries in attempt to balance budget.
Treasurer Mark Pepera was met with stiff resistance from board members Nate Cross and Tim Sullivan as he sought to approve the operational end of the district’s 2011-12 budget. Cross and Sullivan voted against the appropriations at Monday night's Board of Education meeting, while board members Tom Mays, Andrea Rocco and Carol Winter voted for it. The respective 3-2 split is nothing new when it comes to financial matters that go before the board, and Superintendent Dan Keenan took exception to much of Cross’s and Sullivan’s reasoning as it dealt with more of the personnel end of the budget. “What makes it difficult here is (the idea) 'We’re going to hold you for ransom and vote no until you accept my concept or idea,'” Keenan said of …
