Falcone to Join Mays, Winter on Westlake School Board

Trio strongly beat out competition with 20 percent of the votes or more each.

Incumbents Thomas Mays and Carol Winter will be joined by newcomer Anthony Falcone on the Westlake Board of Education next year, according to final unofficial results from the Cuyahoga County Board of Elections. Winter, school board vice president, came out on top at the end of the night with 23 percent of the vote, followed closely by Mays, school board president, with 22 percent and then Falcone with 20 percent. Falcone, underwriting director at RLI Corp., is a Westlake High School graduate with three children in the Westlake schools. He, Mays and Winter supported each other, often using the slogan M-W-F, during the election. Michelle Albert, Robert Bodi, Laurie Gettings and Geoffrey Rapp took between 7 and 11 percent of the 24,946 votes…

School Board Divided Over Five-Year Financial Forecast

Members debate spending in the district and projected deficits.

The Westlake School Board was divided over finances again on Monday night as members debated the approval of the district’s five-year forecast. The forecast, required by the state of Ohio, projects spending through the year 2016 based on assumptions made today. Treasurer Mark Pepera said that while the district is projecting a large deficit by the year 2016, those numbers will change. “We’re doing well with conservative budgeting,” he said. “[The deficit levels] legitimately can’t materialize to the level you’re seeing.” The forecast shows a deficit of $27.5 million in five years, roughly half of the district’s budget. “Logically, that can’t happen because we can’t operate that way,” Pepera said. Board members Nate Cross and Tim Sullivan …

I think you know that Westlake's schools are inadequate, massively inefficient, etc. It's apparent that you have little knowledge of the OSFC or the State's building projects. What did you think they were going to take pictures of, shiny toilets and well trimmed grass? Their job is to evaluate the problems with the structures. The argument that the schools were not maintained might gather some …   more ›

School Board Divided Over Construction Bid

Members voted three to two to accept a construction bid for the new middle school.

The Westlake school board was divided on spending again Monday night as members deliberated on a construction bid to build the new middle school. Officials voted three to two to accept a $2,377,500 bid from Great Lakes Crushing. Board President Tom Mays, Vice President Carol Winter and member Andrea Rocco voted to accept the bid at the work session held at Holly Lane Elementary School, while members Tim Sullivan and Nate Cross objected, saying that the bid was too high, and raising concerns about what will happen when the $84 million budget for Phase I of the Master Facilities plan runs out. Sullivan objected to what he called a “lack of foresight” when the bond issue went on the ballot in May of last year. “When we were telling the public…

Sounds like Keenan is doing a good job. I get the feeling we would never see new schools or any renovations if Sullivan and Cross have their way. What would they do with the money? Just sit on it and hope things get better on their own? Invest it with their buddies?   more ›

Westlake School Board Candidates on Special Education

See what candidates had to say at the West Life forum on Sept. 29.

All seven school board candidates joined a forum hosted by West Life on Thursday evening at the Westlake High School Performing Arts Center. Here is each candidate's response to the question: How do you feel about the special education programs in Westlake and what is your five-year plan regarding special education programming? Robert Bodi "I don’t know a lot about special education programs in Westlake because I haven’t really investigated that part of the school system, but it is the responsibility of the school system to educate all the students in the community... I will say however that I’m disappointed that so much of the educational standards and educational requirements that are imposed on local districts come from federal rules …

School Officials Disagree Over Budget Appropriations

Board members and district administrators look to negotiate with teachers' union to lower or freeze salaries in attempt to balance budget.

Treasurer Mark Pepera was met with stiff resistance from board members Nate Cross and Tim Sullivan as he sought to approve the operational end of the district’s 2011-12 budget. Cross and Sullivan voted against the appropriations at Monday night's Board of Education meeting, while board members Tom Mays, Andrea Rocco and Carol Winter voted for it.  The respective 3-2 split is nothing new when it comes to financial matters that go before the board, and Superintendent Dan Keenan took exception to much of Cross’s and Sullivan’s reasoning as it dealt with more of the personnel end of the budget.  “What makes it difficult here is (the idea) 'We’re going to hold you for ransom and vote no until you accept my concept or idea,'” Keenan said of …
