The Westlake Board of Education has given the treasurer the go-ahead to see how much money a 5.9-mill levy would generate, said board President Tom Mays. That move is actually the first step to putting a levy on the May 2013 ballot. The board will discuss whether to put that levy on the May 7 ballot during its next meeting on Monday, Mays said. If they decide to do that, the board would vote to submit the proper paperwork to the county Board of Elections, and everything must be filed by Feb. 6. This discussion first came up in mid-January. At the time, the board did plan to put a levy before voters in 2013, but members were still undecided if the levy should go on the May or November ballots.

Deal approved by teachers, school board Wednesday
Updated 8:09 p.m. Wednesday An 18-month contract between Westlake City Schools and the union representing teachers and some other school employees was approved by the Board of Education and the Westlake Teachers Association Wednesday. The contract will cut teachers' pay and increase their health care costs. Superintendant Dan Keenan said the contract will save the district between $5 million and $6 million. The deal passed by a wide margin with the union, Westlake Teachers Association president Amy Butcher said. A tentative agreement was reached on Tuesday afternoon. The Westlake Board of Education has moved its regular meeting time from 5:30 to 4:45 p.m. today to allow the board members to tour the high school construction site. The board will continue its meeting at the Westlake High School Library, 27830 Hilliard Blvd., at its regular start time of 5:30.

Westlake High School seniors will be another step closer to graduation after Monday's Board of Education meeting. Board members will be voting to approve the Class of 2012 for graduation. Retired teacher Barbara Leszynski will replace Andrea Rocco.
Retired teacher and former PTA president Barbara Leszynski joined the Westlake Board of Education Wednesday night. Leszynski will fill the open seat left by Andrea Rocco, who stepped down due to her new position as special counsel to Cuyahoga County Executive Ed FitzGerald. The board voted unanimously to appoint Leszynski after interviewing all 19 applicants this month. Leszynski was a seventh-grade science teacher at the North Olmsted City Schools for 21 years, and served as president of the North Olmsted Education Association. Her three children graduated from Westlake High School, and she has four grandchildren in the school system. Her daughter also works with the district as an elementary intervention specialist. Westlake school board members have set the process to find a replacement for Andrea Rocco. Longtime Westlake School Board member Andrea Rocco announced Monday that she will be stepping down from her seat, due to her new position as special counsel to Cuyahoga County Executive Ed FitzGerald. Rocco has been a board member for more than 10 years after her appointment to a vacant seat in 2001. In 2002 and 2005, she was elected vice president, and served as president in 2008 and 2009. Superintendent Dan Keenan asked Rocco to consider staying on the board through the next phase of schools construction and to plan for the 2012-13 school year budget. “As a result of County Executive FitzGerald’s policy that county cabinet employees not hold public office, I regrettably have to resign from my school board seat,” Rocco said in a statement…

Members elected Tom Mays board president and Carol Winter board vice president.
Westlake city school board members elected Tom Mays as president and Carol Winter as vice president for the second time Monday night by a unanimous vote. Mays, Winter and newcomer Tony Falcone were sowrn in at the first Board of Education meeting of the year before members nominated and elected the president and vice president. The school board also re-appointed Tom Mays as the Ohio School Boards Association liaison. Tony Falcone was newly appointed to the cirriculum committee, and Nate Cross was appointed for another year. Cross was also appointed to the tax incentive review council.

Teacher contracts and school construction projects will be top priorities next year.
