Veterans Honored at Ames Family Hospice

Flag donated by Elyria American Legion 12 is raised in Veterans Day ceremony

The first Veterans Day at Ames Family Hospice was a special one. A new flag, donated by Elyria American Legion Post 12, was raised at the flagpole Sunday afternoon by Post 12 members Bill Brokop and Ron Carr. Buglers played Taps, and Carr gave a short speech on the history and importance of Veterans Day. One hospice patient, a woman who served in the Army, was given a pin honoring her service in a ceremony following the flag-raising. "We're all part of a family," Carr said of those who have served. "She is our sister-in-arms." Veterans who serve as Ames Family Hospice volunteers were also honored with a reception afterwards. Tom Schuerger of Westlake, who served in the U.S. and Okinawa from 1960-64, is one of those volunteers. He has been …

Some Gave All: A Salute to Veterans

One of the veterans who helped raise the flag at Ames Family Hospice shares his thoughts on Veterans Day.

Ron Carr was a fitting person to speak at Sunday's Veterans Day flag-raising at Ames Family Hospice. Carr is a member of Elyria American Legion Post 12, which donated the flag to fly at the hospice. He and fellow Post 12 member Bill Brokop raised the flag. After the flag was raised, Carr gave a short speech on the history and importance of Veterans Day. Check out the attached video to see some of it. Carr served in the Army during the Allied occupation of Germany in the 1950s. His family has a long tradition of service. On his mother's side, he has ancestors who fought in the American Revolution. On his father's side, it goes back to the Civil War. It's why he likes attending events such as Sunday's flag-raising. "It's an honor to do it," …
