The Demons tore it up on the tennis court and broke records on the track.
Tennis Colton Buffington beat two of his three competitors at the State Tournament in Columbus on Friday and earned a spot in the semifinals. The sophomore beat Ruben Geearaet of Centerville, 6-1, 6-0, and Nicky Wong of Lexington 7-5, 3-6, 7-5. Girls Track and Field The Demons had several regional qualifiers at Amherst on Friday. The 200 meter relay team of Stephanie Robb, Erin D'Ettorre, Maddie Sandhu and Sarah Stachowiak set a new school record and won fourth place. Senior Kalpana Beach earned second place in high jump and the 400 meter relay team of Robb, Hayley Smik, Sandhu and Stachowiak earned fourth place. The girls track team finished fourth overall at the Southwest Conference Track and Field Championship Friday.
The Demon girls track team took fourth place at the Southwest Conference Track and Field Championship Friday at Westlake High School. Demon senior Kalpana Beach won her third consecutive high jump championship, clearing 5 feet, 4 inches. Beach set the meet record at 5 feet, 8 inches in 2009. Long-jump record-holder Kaila Barber of Midpark broke her own distance with 19 feet, 4 inches while Westlake’s Hayley Smik took second place in the long jump (16-1). Three Westlake High School football players: Jacob Kutz, Elias Chbeir and Justin Smith, have been chosen to play in the 39th annual Cuyahoga County East vs. West All-Star Game on June 17 at Tressel Field at Baldwin-Wallace College TENNIS The Westlake High School boys tennis team is the Southwestern Conference champions, winning all five matches to defeat number two ranked Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy in state Division II. The season kicks off for both the boys and girls teams this Saturday with the Medina relays.
Despite the winter chill, Westlake High School's boys and girls track and field teams are warming up for what looks to be an exciting season that will kick off this Saturday with the Medina relays. For the boys team, their main focus is to contend for the number one ranking in the Southwestern Conference (SWC), which is comprised of eight high school teams, including Westlake, Amherst, Avon Lake, North Olmsted, Brecksville, Midpark, Berea and Olmsted falls, head coach Jake Schober said. “Some of our biggest rivals this year will be Midpark, Amherst and North Olmsted,” he said. “We have a big group of seniors going into this season and we’re anticipating a strong sprint squad.
