If you haven't raked your yard lately, you're running out of time for the city to pick up your leaves.
Raking procrastinators, the clock is ticking. The last day for city leaf pick-up is Friday, Dec. 14. Leaf collection fell behind in early November as city workers scrambled to clean up downed branches and other debris from superstorm Sandy. The city then went on a seven-day schedule to catch up on leaf removal. Crews were doing a Wednesday pick-up on Monday. Check the attached PDF documents for a day's route. You can find out where city crews will be that day on the City of Westlake website. Just click on "Leaf Collection Updates" for daily updates on collections. If you have questions, contact the Service Department between 7:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. weekdays at 440-835-6432. Here are some reminders from the city as you put out the last of the…

City appropriates funds to pay for storm cleanup
The cost of cleaning up trees and other debris after superstorm Sandy blew through Westlake left the city with a big bill to pay. City Council appropriated $104,000 to its forestry account at Thursday's meeting to make up for what it has to spend on cleanup. Finance director Prashant Shah said that $96,000 of that is for personnel costs, including regular salary as well as overtime. The other $14,000 is for supplies and other expenses related to the cleanup. Service director Paul Quinn III said on Wednesday that city crews have had to deal with about 4,000 cubic yards of brush after the storm. On average, the city cleans up 5,000 cubic yards of brush for the entire year. After Thursday's meeting, Quinn said that the city spends about $190,…

Patch will donate $1 to AmeriCares for every Twitter tweet with the hashtag #PatchRebuilds
One of the sights I will never forget is watching New York Harbor fill up like a bathtub, and then overflow. My husband and I watched from our Jersey City hotel, which was right on the water at Exchange Place, as Hurricane Sandy raged outside and the water kept coming. And coming. Eventually, it came into the hotel. We spent the next week living with the results, but we were lucky. Right down the road, in Staten Island, things were much, much worse. Dealing with the damage continues, two weeks after the storm. And you can help the victims of Sandy. Click here to go to PatchRebuilds. From there, you can tweet your love to communties and people affected by Sandy. For every tweet with the hashtag #PatchRebuilds, Patch will donate $1 to …

Employees help out, and you can, too
It's been said it's far better to have a neighbor who's near, than a brother who's far away, but in the wake of Hurricane Sandy, Americans across the nation have proven to be the best neighbors and the strongest of families. This past weekend, AOL and Patch employees took an opportunity to pitch in, packing two tractor trailers worth of food, water and supplies in Dulles, VA, and Baltimore. The donations are headed to Hurricane Sandy ravaged areas in New Jersey and Long Island. Want to join the relief efforts? Click here to donate: https://donate.networkforgood.org/aol "When a catastrophe of this size hits, we all feel it, both the hundreds of us who live in the impacted towns, and our colleagues who are watching and wishing they could …
