Westlake's Stuckart Misses Out On State Crown

Senior wrestler fades in consolations, ending a memorable high school career.

The Westlake Demons fielded one wrestler at this past weekend’s OHSAA Division I State Wrestling Championships and came away without earning a top-eight placing. Senior Sheldon Stuckart (40-4 record entering state) was a strong contender to win the 152-pound crown and started off strong with a opening round, 15-7 major decision win over Hudson senior Tyler Peacock. In his second championship round match, Stuckart lost to sophomore Nick Corba of Beavercreek via decision, 7-4, to send the Demon grappler to the consolation bracket. In the consolations, Wooster senior Anthony Catanzarite ended Stuckart’s day with a 15-1 major decision victory.  Coach Mike Antonyzyn's team of one finished tied for 62nd overall with three points, well-behind …

Demons' Sheldon Stuckart Qualifies For State Tournament

The Westlake High School senior took second place at district competition Sunday.

The blizzard that dumped over a foot of snow on Northeast Ohio pushed District wrestling action back a day, but Westlake coach Mike Antonyzyn was all smiles about having to make a return trip on Sunday to Lorain High School. That's because the Demons' Sheldon Stuckart had perhaps the biggest upset of the tournament when he downed Medina High School's Teddy Hammer during first day action. Not only did he win his match, but he did so in stunning fashion via fall in 1:06 after catching Hammer with a hunter hook. "I was almost really surprised over it," Stuckart said with a huge smile on his face. "I didn't' know what I would do in that match. I had watched how he wrestled and knew his tendencies, so I was able to fend them off. I then used a…

Westlake's Stuckart Shines In SWC Tourney

Senior wrestler wins 152-pound title; Demons team finishes in sixth place.

Westlake High School's Sheldon Stuckart showed nothing but heart and determination during Saturday's 152-pound championship match in the Southwestern Conference Tournament. Holding a 3-2 lead with about 30 seconds left on the clock, Stuckart dug deep down and found a way to fight off Brecksville-Broadview Heights' Andrew Barr and hold on for the one-point win. "This is my last year; I had to win it," said an emotional Stuckart. " I never wrestled him before, but I knew Brecksville has a lot of tricks up their sleeves, so I was ready." Stuckart was exhausted after his match, and with good reason. After jumping out to a 3-0 lead, Barr made it a 3-2 match with just under a minute to go. Barr grabbed hold of Stuckart's leg and tried to bring …

Westlake Gets Two Champions At Campana Holiday Classic

Wrestlers Steve Robb and Sheldon Stuckart win individual championships.

For years it was known as the Southview Holiday Classic, but when the Lorain school district merged its high schools, the wrestling tourney got re-named the Jennee Campana Holiday Classic. It also got a new champion, as Westlake could not fend off the Lorain Titans, who won their inaugural tourney with 288.5 points. But considering the Demons graduated 10 seniors from last year, coach Mike Antonyzyn couldn't have been prouder of his boys. "Four of our kids were not here, two with injuries and we had four kids in the finals, so that was really impressive for us," Antonyzyn said. "We are a young team, we have just two seniors and we were on the doorstep of taking home second place, so we did real well." Westlake had four wrestlers in the …

Westlake Wrestlers Set Example for Younger Teammates Through Hard Work

Demons coach "Ant" Antonyzyn rebuilding team that graduated 10 seniors last year.

It doesn't matter to Westlake wrestling coach Mike ''Ant'' Antonyzyn that he lost 10 seniors from last year's team, which featured Nick Lawrence, a freshman at Purdue this season. Antonyzyn is having fun watching is young team compete this season, despite the lack of experience.  ''We have great kids, a great staff and we have good numbers, with about 40 wrestlers,'' Antonyzyn said.  Leading the Demons this year are seniors Sheldon Stuckart (160 pounds) and Alex Cahill (145),  and junior Andrew Sprang (112). Stuckart's record is 19-1. Antonyzyn is excited to have Cahill, a four-year letter winner, back in the lineup. Cahill injured his knee in the first meet of the season and has been out of action for the past two weeks. He will return …
