Here's what happened in Westlake this week
Music teacher and Westlake United Methodist Church choir director Kevin Foster, 36, was arrested and charged with providing alcohol to two underaged young women who were students in his private music teaching business. Westlake Police are investigating other relationships Foster may have had with students. A Westlake man had an epic post-DUI meltdown, threatening to rape and kill relatives of St. John Medical Center employees, biting a nurse and breaking her finger. Christopher Warner, 22, is being charged with DUI, hit-skip and driving under suspension and will likely face felony assault charges for attacking the nurse. Incumbent Republican 16th District State Representative Nan Baker and her Democratic challenger, Andrew Mayer, talked …

Money will be used to buy child-sized restraint boards
In the grand scheme of things in municipal spending, $1,000 may not sound like much. But it's making a difference for the Westlake Fire Department. A $1,000 grant made to Westlake Kiwanis from Kiwanis International will be used by the Fire Department to buy four child restraint devices for the gurneys in its ambulances. Westlake Kiwanis president Rick Grane found out in August that the grant had been awarded to Westlake Kiwanis. On Tuesday, he was able to present the check to Westlake assistant fire chief Jim Hughes. "A lot of people think of Kiwanis and they think pancake breakfasts, and community service," said Grane. "But, worldwide, we're an organization for children." Grane applied for the First Ladies Project grant through the Ohio …

Grant awarded to Westlake Kiwanis will buy equipment to safely transport sick or injured children
Children needing an ambulance in Westlake will soon be transported even more safely, thanks to a grant secured by Westlake Kiwanis. The grant is for $1,000 from Kiwanis International. It will be used to buy at least three Pedi-Mate restraint systems, which help keep children secure on a gurney when they're being taken to the hospital in an ambulance, for Westlake Fire Department. "Kids can slide and roll around when they're on a gurney," said Westlake Kiwanis president Rick Grane. "They can even fall off. This will keep them safe so they won't hurt themselves further." Grane consulted with Lt. Craig Dayton of the Fire Department to find out what child-related items the department needed. He had never written a grant proposal before, but in…

Tenth annual event held at Recreation Center Park
A new location gave a new vibe to the tenth annual Westlake Relay for Life, which got underway Friday afternoon at Recreation Center Park. The event was moved there because of the construction at Westlake High School. Were you at the event? Share your photos here! A "track" was painted in on the open field behind the playground and next to the ballfield. Inside the track, tents were set up for camping, as well as for organizations invoved in the Relay and the gift basket raffle table. Amy Brediger, co-chair for the event, said she liked the feel being on the field gave. "It doesn't feel as enclosed," she said. "And, since this is a campout, it makes it feel more like one." Co-chair Rick Grane had been on the scene since 8 a.m. Friday. He …

The votes are in, and we have a winner! Westlake Patch readers have voted Rick Grane's literal interpretation of a bicentennial beard the best in the city. A group of 10 men competed last week in the official Bicentennial Beard-Growing Contest at City Hall as the city celebrates its 200th birthday. The bewhiskered men each started with a clean-shaven face in July and grew their beards for four months in hopes of winning in categories like best beard, most innovative beard and longest beard. We put the vote to you, and you picked Grane's as the best with 27 votes, followed by Andrew Mangels with 10 votes and Mel Maurer with 7 votes. See what judges Martha Campbell, Lisa Cruse, Tracy Heberle, Sylvia Scherm, Karen Wolf and Marian Zietz …
