Excedrin Recall Headaches: #2 Story of the Year

Migraine sufferers really wanted their favorite medicine back

Brand loyalty can be a fierce, powerful thing. That was evident when drug company Novartis voluntarily recalled several of its over-the-counter medications -- including No-Doz, Bufferin and Gas-X -- in early January. But it was the inclusion in the recall of some Excedrin products such as Excedrin Migraine, Excedrin Menstrual and Excedrin PM that sparked a passionate response. Through late November, readers were commenting on the original January 9 story. People wanting to know where their Excedrin was and when it was coming back made this story the second most popular story on Westlake Patch in 2012. Westlake Patch stayed on top of the story, offering alternatives to favorite products and letting readers know when Novartis announced the …

No serious injuries have been reported as a result of the cereal. Check your shelves for the affected cereal — the only cereal affected are those boxes with KB, AP or FK before or after the Best If Used Before date. Heinen's, Dave's Market, Giant Eagle and Marc's in the Cleveland region confirmed that they carried the recalled product and have now unshelved the recalled products from their stores. The full list of recalled cereal can be found at the …

Johnson & Johnson Voluntarily Recalls Infants' Tylenol

The company is recalling the product after receiving complaints about its dosage system.

Johnson & Johnson has announced that it will be voluntarily recalling about 574,000 bottles of Infants' Tylenol. The company said it is recalling the product as a precaution after receiving  complaints from people who reported difficulty using the product's new dosing system. Specifically, the grape-flavored Infants Tylenol includes a syringe, which someone inserts into a protective cover at the top of the bottle to measure the proper dose. However, in some cases, the protective cover— called a flow restrictor— was pushed into the bottle when inserting the syringe. Excedrin Recall Continues, Here Are Some Alternatives

No word on when the pills will return to shelves.

The recent recall of Excedrin, NoDoz, Gas-X and Bufferin has left many without the medicine they typically use to cure their ills. Distributing drug company Novartis would not say when the pills would be back on the shelf, but Dr. Alice Stollenwerk Petrulis with MetroHealth in Westlake has a few suggestions until they become available again. "Bufferin is just buffered aspirin and Gas-X is Beano," she said. "The easiest thing to do is figure out what the active ingredient is, and find something with the same dosage." Ecotrin, a kind of aspirin, works just as well as Bufferin, Petrulis said. A low dose would be around 180 milligrams, and a high dose would be 345 milligrams. Petrulis suggests Mylanta Gas liquid, an antacid, as a substitute …

Pfizer Issues Birth Control Recall

Packages may contain the wrong number of active pills or pills in the wrong order.

Pfizer Inc. is voluntarily recalling about 1 million birth control packs after discovering that some blister packs may have the wrong number of active or inactive tablets, and that the tablets may be out of order. Pfizer said that the error could leave women without adequate contraception and could put them at risk for unwanted pregnancy. However, the packaging defects do not pose an immediate health risk. The drug company has identified 14 lots of Lo/Ovral tablets and 14 lots of Norgestrel and Ethinyl Estradiol tablets. The drug company is encouraging anyone who has used the affected tablets to begin using a non-hormonal form of contraception immediately. Anyone with affected products should tell their doctor and return the package to …
