North Coast Challenge a Day for Family, Community

Race raises money for local charities and organizations

Saturday's North Coast Challenge brought out everyone from hard-core racers to walkers to children for the annual event that supports Westlake charities and organizations. More than 430 runners ran the 5-mile race that started near St. John Medical Center's entrance on Center Ridge Road. Ages ranged from 10 to 84. Were you at the race? Share your photos here! Click the "Upload photos and videos" button to get started. Mourad Marofit was the overall winner in 23 minutes, 22.5 seconds. Jessica Kuhr was the top woman finisher in 26:30.67. Westlake mayor Dennis Clough was the first finisher in the 2-mile walk. "I don't train for this," he said. "I just do the elliptical five times a week." The race was also a family experience. North Coast Challege Brings Fun, Road Closures

Local organizations benefit from annual race

A Westlake tradition continues Saturday with the 22nd annual North Coast Challenge. The 5-mile run and 2-mile walk begin at 8:30 a.m. on Center Ridge Road. The University Hospitals Kids' Fun Run will be at 9:45 a.m. St. John Medical Center is the home base for the event, which also includes a health expo, refreshments, entertainment, children's activities and prizes. North Coast Challenge Will Close Roads to Car Traffic

Sept. 1 race will close roads for about 3 hours.

Next Saturday, Sept. 1, starting at 7 a.m. the city will close Center Ridge Road from Dover Center to Bradley Road to accommodate the annual North Coast Challenge event. Scheduled events include a 2-mile walk, a 5-mile run, and a Kids Fun Run. All of the roads should reopen by 11 a.m. North Olmsted Police will close Stearns Road northbound at Lorain Road.     Officers will be rerouting traffic in the area. The races all start near the campus of St. John Medical Center. Officers will allow emergency access to the hospital. North Coast Challenge Makes Westlake Big Winner

The 21st annual race raised funds for lots of Westlake charities.

Over 400 runners braved the heat Saturday morning to take part in the 5-mile race at North Coast Challenge. Usually held at St. John Medical Center, the run was held at Crocker Park this year, due to construction at the hospital. For the past 20 years, the charity run has raised money for several Westlake nonprofit groups and programs like D.A.R.E., Youth Challenge and the Westlake Kiwanis, as well as the Westlake Fire Department, Recreation Department and Porter Public Library.

This Weekend: Demons Take the Field, Dogs Take Over Peterson Pool

From the big North Coast Challenge run to a Friday night beer tasting, there's plenty to do in Westlake this weekend!

DOG DAY AFTERNOON AT PETERSON POOL Where/When: Clague Park / 1-4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 3 Why Go: It's time to let the dogs have their day in the pool! Bring your pooch and let them splash, swim and frolic with other dogs. The event is free, but a $2 donation at the pool is encouraged to benefit the Westlake Animal Shelter. Dancing, Drumming and More

Here are five things you should know today.

1) Westlake Porter Public Library is hosting Let's Sing and Dance from 10:30 to 11 a.m. Miss Nancy will lead kids ages 2 to 6 in songs and dance in the Storytime Room. call 40-871-2600 to register. 2) The Gathering Place West is hosting a drum circle for those dealing with cancer from 7 to 8 p.m. tonight. The circle is open to anyone who has been touched by cancer, whether it be themselves, a friend, family member, coworker or someone else. Drums are provided, but registration is required. North Coast Challenge To Take Over Crocker Park

The North Coast Challenge fundraiser donates all of its profits to charities in Westlake.

North Coast Challenge, a 5-mile race to benefit various charities in  Westlake, has a new home at Crocker Park this year due to construction at St. John Medical Center and will take place on Sept. 3 at 8 a.m. “We have raised over $1.4 million for charity over the 20 years. The last two years have been challenging with the economy so tough and most companies cutting back charitable donations,” said Executive Director and Co-Founder Bud Tetzlaff. “This year we expect a significant increase [in attendance] with the new venue of Crocker Park and some new and different marketing.” Last year 1,300 participants and 40 businesses participated.
