The Lee Burneson Middle School team tied with North Royalton.
The Lee Burneson Middle School Math Demons tied for second place in their division at the 2012 Equations competition at the Educational Service Center of Cuyahoga County. Equations is a game developed by a University of Michigan professor using cubes to create equations. Westlake's team of Jonathan Alamir, Alex Ikezawa, Taeho Kim, Austin Kinney and Ryan Zubricky and Chris Slater tied for second place among 7th- and 8th-graders with North Royalton. Seventh-grader Carter Hoon took a third place individual award for his grade, as did eighth-grader Jonathan Alamir.

The Lee Burneson Middle School Math Demons made a good showing at the FIRST LEGO League Competition where students built their own robots, researched food spoilage and learned about teamwork. The Demons took home the innovative solution award for their research on how to prevent food spoilage in a refrigerator at the competition held Saturday at Warren G. Harding High School. The team created a solution to food spoilage— a smart refrigerator that tracks the expiration date of the food inside. The team also won fourth place in the robotics competition, in which they had to build and program a robot to complete a number of tasks.
