Demon Boys Track Finishes Fifth in Conference Finals

Midpark's Conner Neu set a new meet discus throw record.

The Avon Lake Shoremen took the Southwest Conference Track and Field Championship in a runaway for the second year in a row on Friday. The Shoremen won three events and took second in six events, earning 126 points - giving them a big lead over Berea, who came in second with 80 points. The Demons took fifth overall at the meet held at Westlake High School Friday, with Peter Ogonek earning the team's only win in the 800-meter run (1:58.96). Josh Buzzard, Jack St. Marie, Gavin Kelly and Peter Ogonek took third in the 800 meter relay. St. Marie went on to take third in the 1600-meter run (4:25.07) and the 3200-meter run (9:51.32) Alex Schultz took second in the long jump with 20-06.5. Westlake Girls Finish Third, Boys Fifth At Sectional

Joe Craven wins 100 fly; Girls trio of Splain, Smith, and Choban finish second.

The Westlake swim team took third place in the Division I girls sectional meet at Lakewood High on Saturday after seeing the Demon boys team place fifth in the Division I boys sectional meet in the same pool the day before. With 228 points, the Demon girls placed behind champion Strongsville (475.5) and Magnificat (360). Westlake was led by a trio of second-place finishes from seniors Megan Splain in the 200 individual medley, Heather Smith in the 100 free, and junior Lauren Choban in the 100 back. Splain had a time of 2 minutes, 17.34 seconds in the 200 IM where double winner Amanda Paliska of Olmsted Falls won in 2:15.23. Smith swam a 56.58 to place behind only Jenna Barrus of Strongsville (55.99) in the 100 free. Choban had a 1:02.21 in…

Westlake Girls Win Their Share of Southwest Conference Swim Title, Break Pool Record

The Westlake girls swim team got a pair of individual champions as hosts of the 30th Southwestern Conference championships from senior Megan Splain and junior Lauren Choban on Saturday, but it came down to one relay race to clinch the team scoring title over Brecksville-Broadview Heights. "Our 'C' relay in the 400 meter freestyle was the key to the whole day," said Westlake coach Jessica Dye. "They really came through." Dye added that the team's eighth place finish gave Westlake 10 additional points on the way to a 339-331.5 win over the Bees at Westlake Recreation Center. Westlake Boys Swim Team Beats Brecksville, 103-82

Demon girls fall short, lose to Bees on the road.

The Westlake High boys swim team got double win nights from Jack St. Marie and Joe Craven to push the Demons to 4-1 in Southwestern Conference action with a 103-82 win over host Brecksville-Broadview Heights at the Brecksville Recreation Center. The Demon girls suffered their first SWC setback with a 100-86 loss, despite getting a double win performance from Megan Splain that included her first swim of the 500-yard free this season. "Our girls knew this would be a tough meet," said Demons coach Jessica Dye, whose team gets back into the water Jan. 21 at home against Midpark and hosts Olmsted Falls Jan. 29 to conclude the SWC regular season.
