International Baccalaureate, School Shootings Lead Week's News

Here's a look back at the biggest stories of the past week

A Westlake man is accused of nailing a door shut to stop his wife from leaving, threatening to kill her and burn their house down, and then attacking police officers. Westlake City Schools have gotten a $100,000 grant from the state for the International Baccalaureate program it plans to start jointly with Avon Lake and Berea schools. As we get into holiday party season, we looked back on the DUIs of 2012. What's the highest blood-alcohol level found so far this year? It's a stunning number. Westlake Police reported thefts from cars and homes around town recently. The school shootings in Newtown, Conn., transfixed the nation since Friday. For some of us, the tragedy was literally close to home. And it raised the question of school safety …

Westlake Schools Get $100K State Grant for International Baccalaureate

Diploma programme will be shared with Avon Lake, Berea

Westlake City Schools have scored an Ohio Local Government Innovation Fund grant of $100,000 for its planned International Baccalaureate diploma programme for Westlake High School. The program will be established with Avon Lake City Schools and Berea City Schools. With the grant, 32 staff members including counselors, administrators and 20 teachers will receive training for the International Baccalaureate program. Westlake Elementary Schools Prepare for International Baccalaureate Program

District will apply for candidacy in April with help of grant from Martha Holden Jennings Foundation.

Westlake teachers are learning to conduct class in a whole new way as the district gets ready to start an International Baccalaureate program for students in kindergarten through fourth grade. And now, thanks to a $40,000 grant from the Martha Holden Jennings Foundation, students and staff will be able to share what they're learning with other classrooms all over the world. The grant money is helping to cover the cost of staff training and workshops, but it also provided digital cameras for students to document the process of becoming an IB school. "It's like a living history project," said Pam Griebel, Westlake Academic Services director. "Years from now, folks can look at that and see how it all started. They can record for projects, …

Teacher Feature: International Baccalaureate Program Coming to Westlake in 2014

Westlake City School administrators and educators will work through the summer and into 2012 to prepare the district's application for candidacy.

By 2014, the curricula taught in Westlake’s elementary schools will undergo quite a transformation as administrators and teachers are in the process of planning and developing an International Baccalaureate (IB) program that will be aligned with the district’s continuous improvement plan.  Bassett principal Ben Hodge, curriculum director Pam Griebel, and IB coordinators Deb Wadden and Colleen Steidel will be helping to position Bassett – along with Dover, Hilliard and Holly Lane Elementary Schools – to take on this scholastic feat.  Why 2014? Good question. It’s because IB isn’t any ordinary program.  Administrators and teachers have to develop new lesson plans that abide by IB’s strict educational guidelines that require each student to …
