Westlake Teachers Show Love for Newtown

Holly Lane Elementary School teachers grieve for their fallen peers in Sandy Hook Elementary School shootings

Grief and gratitude were the emotions of the day for teachers and staff at Holly Lane Elementary School on Monday. Many wore green and white to show support for the people of Newtown, Conn., after Friday's mass murder at Sandy Hook Elementary School. Did you wear green and white for Newtown? "I looked at (their pictures) and they looked like us," said teacher Kristi Fortuna, fighting tears. "Like them, we do everything we can to make our students' days amazing. Holly Lane Elementary Supply Lists Shared

If you have a child at Holly Lane, keep these lists handy.

The back-to-school countdown is on for Westlake City Schools. One week from today, students will be heading back to school. Which means, parents, you have one week to get their supplies in order. Westlake Patch is helping parents out by posting the supply lists for all of Westlake City Schools. Today, we've got the supply lists for Holly Lane Elementary School. There's one list for kindergarten, one list for grades 1 through 3, and one list for grade 4. You can print out the PDF forms attached here, or check them out on your phone at the store, to make sure you're getting everything your child needs to start the school year.

Westlake Author's Book Could Win Big Prize For Holly Lane Elementary

David Simon's kids' book 'Up Ned's Nose,' is up for a grand prize of a MeeGenius library for the school.

David Simon first created Ned over a decade ago, and the two of them even landed a book deal. Now they need your help to make it big, and win a library of e-books for Holly Lane Elementary School. Simon, a Westlake resident, illustrator and author, wrote the children’s story of Ned and his odd talent for sticking things up his nose 12 years ago. In Up Ned’s Nose, Ned has managed to stick Martha’s shiny new nickel up his nose, and hilarity ensues when his older brother tries to get it out. “I wrote it just for the heck of it,” Simon said. “It was under contract with a publisher for a number of years, but the kids’ division wasn’t performing.”  Simon did get to see some of the preliminary illustrations for the book, but says he’s excited to …

Westlake Counselor Receives Lifetime Achievement Award

Bobbi English was honored Thursday with the Mary Claytor/Charles Weaver Life Achievement & Membership Award for 34 years of work.

Westlake school counselor Bobbi English was honored for her 34 years of work in the field Thursday with the Mary Claytor/Charles Weaver Life Achievement & Membership Award. English, a counselor at Hilliard and Holly Lane elementary schools, was nominated by Mimi Verdone, principal of Holly Lane, former Hilliard Principal Mary Flanagan, Holly Lane kindergarten teacher Suzie Zkiab and Holly Lane physical education teacher Nick Miller. In her nomination letter, Verdone called English a caring professional. “As an elementary counselor for 34 years, she models the kindness and empathy that we all strive to emulate,” she wrote. “Bobbi has a remarkable energy level and an exceptional work ethic.” Flanagan said English’s legacy will be “that she …
