Semi-automatic rifles removed from stores and online shopping sites. Do you think this is the right decision?
In the wake of Friday's mass murder at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., two major retailers are responding. Dick's Sporting Goods has removed all guns from its store nearest to Newtown, and has stopped sales of some semi-automatic rifles, described by Dick's as "modern sporting rifles" in its stores nationwide, including the Dick's at Crocker Park. “We are extremely saddened by the unspeakable tragedy that occurred last week in Newtown, CT, and our hearts go out to the victims and their families, and to the entire community,” a statement on the Dick’s website said. Walmart has removed the Bushmaster Patrolman's Carbine M4A3 Rifle from its online store. What do you think? Should these guns be off the shelves for good? Or is …

Regal Cinema weapons suspect Scott A. Smith has bond hearing this afternoon.
Scott A. Smith, arrested over the weekend for bringing a loaded gun, ammunition and four knives into Regal Cinema for a late-night showing of The Dark Knight Rises, was carrying the weapons for self-defense, his lawyer said Wednesday. After the Aurora, Colo., shootings and other incidents, Smith "felt fear" going to the movie by himself, attorney Matthew Bruce said. "He brought (the weapons) in with him purely for self-defense," Bruce said. "He had no intent to harm, scare or threaten anyone." Smith was arrested after off-duty Westlake police officer Jeremiah Bullins, who was working security for Regal Cinema that night, approached Smith, who was sitting in the back row of the still-empty theater, and searched his bag. Bullins discovered …
Scott A. Smith of North Ridgeville accused of bringing a gun, ammunition and knives to showing of 'The Dark Knight Rises.'
When Westlake police officer Jeremiah Bullins spotted Scott A. Smith in an empty movie theater at Regal Cinema, Smith was in the very back row, in the middle seat. A waist pack sat at his feet. Bullins, who was in uniform but working off-duty as security for Regal Cinema, had been suspicious of Smith after being alerted about him and his waist pack by a Regal Cinema employee. He approached Smith, and asked to search the waist pack. Smith agreed. With that, a potential tragedy was averted as Smith was arrested on weapons charges. "It could have been a disaster," Westlake Police Lieutenant Ray Arcuri said Tuesday. "Where (Smith) was, once he'd gotten started (shooting), there would have been multiple victims." Check out the latest from the …
First Aurora, now an incident at Regal Cinema in Crocker Park, has people talking about safety, weapons and how to protect movie-goers from 'Dark Knight' copycats.
Words like "disaster" and "tragedy" were used to describe what could have happened at Regal Cinema on Saturday night. But, thanks to the actions of a cinema employee and an off-duty Westlake police officer working security, Scott A. Smith of North Ridgeville sits in jail on weapons charges after he was found to have a loaded 9MM Glock semiautomatic handgun, two more loaded magazines, and four knives on him as he sat in an empty theater. The movie he was going to see? In a scary reminder of the Aurora, Colo., shootings, Smith had bought a ticket to see The Dark Knight Rises. The Aurora shootings showed how vulnerable people are in movie theaters. Once the movie starts, it's dark, crowded and loud in there. While Regal Cinema won't discuss …

After a Regal Cinema employee spotted it, officer Jeremiah Bullins gave a second search of Scott Smith's bag in movie theater where "The Dark Knight Rises" was to be shown, finding a small cache of weapons.
The good eyes and good instincts of a Regal Cinema employee and an off-duty Westlake Police Department officer may have been the difference between a quiet Saturday night at the movies, and a horrific tragedy like the Aurora, Colo., shootings. According to Westlake police, an unidentified Regal Cinema employee spotted Scott A. Smith, 37, as he came into the cinema for a 10 p.m. showing of The Dark Knight Rises. He was wearing a Maxpedition waist pack, which may have looked like a fanny pack to most people. After security was alerted, a Regal Cinema manager approached Smith and asked to inspect his bag. The flap on the bag was raised, and the manager saw nothing like a weapon inside. Smith was allowed to go on his way into the theater. What…
Scott A. Smith in Westlake jail after being arrested at Regal Cinema at Crocker Park with a gun, ammunition, knives and "survival equipment."
A small arsenal of weapons were removed Monday night from the North Ridgeville home of Scott A. Smith, who was arrested after showing up armed with a gun, ammunition and four knives at a showing of The Dark Knight Rises Saturday night at Regal Cinema in Crocker Park. Westlake Police Department lieutenant Ray Arcuri said Tuesday afternoon that his department was still going through everything seized from Smith's home. Here are the highlights: Police also seized computers from Smith's home, and are awaiting a search warrant to look through them. Prescription medications were also taken. Police are still verifying what they are, Arcuri said, but he believed one was a blood pressure medication. If there is a problem with prescription drug …
Scott A. Smith of North Ridgeville arrested after bringing bag of weapons into Saturday night showing of "The Dark Knight Rises."
Updated 1:20 p.m. A North Ridgeville man has been arrested after bringing a gun, ammunition and three knives to Regal Cinema over the weekend. In an unsettling connection to the Aurora, Colo., mass shooting last month that left 12 people dead, Scott A. Smith, 37, had bought a ticket to Saturday's 10 p.m. showing of The Dark Knight Rises at the Crocker Park movie theater. According to Westlake police, Regal Cinema management had seen Smith entering the theater with some kind of a bag and alerted security, and the bag was checked without finding anything suspicious. But an off-duty Westlake police officer working security, and in full uniform, then tracked down Smith in his seat and asked to search the Maxpedition bag. Smith was the only …
