Westlake High School Demons have second-highest GPA in Ohio
Westlake High School's girls' soccer team is smart as well as good. The Demons were named a first team Scholastic All-America Team by Adidas National Soccer Coaches Association. The award is given on the basis of academic achievement as well as on-field accomplishments. They are also ranked second in Ohio with a 4.07 grade-point average. Westlake was the Southwestern Conference champion this year. The Demons advanced to the regional semifinal, where they lost to Medina, 1-0, in overtime. They finished with an 11-7-1 record. Coach Scott Jones was named the SWC Coach of the Year.

Demons advance to semifinals
Westlake High School's girls soccer team won its OHSAA district tournament opener Wednesday night, defeating Avon, 2-1, at Lee Burneson Middle School. The Demons jumped out to a 1-0 lead on Maya Bauer's goal with 24 minutes left in the first half. They kept that lead until a minute left in the first half, when Emilie Wetzig scored for Avon to tie the game. Westlake took the lead with a goal by Missy Murthy with 22 minutes left. The sixth-seeded Demons (9-6-1) advance to the district semifinals, where they will play the winner of Thursday's game between Midview and Amherst. The game is set for 3 p.m. Saturday.

Here’s the skinny on what happened in Westlake this week, just in case you missed something: Lady Demons Coach Wins 100th Game Girls basketball coach Chip Weiss won his 100th game Thursday night, leading the Demons to a 66-36 win against Margaretta. Kalpana Beach earned 13 points and got 10 rebounds. She's now at 686 and has a chance to break the 27-year-old record Saturday against Avon Lake. Local Musicians Raise Funds For Music Programs Music On A Mission rocked out at the Savannah to raise funds for their music programs. The group does much of its work in Lorain County, but also puts on activities at Huntington Woods Care & Rehab Center in Westlake.
