Most of the time, letting a friend drive when you've had too much to drink is a good idea. When that friend has also been drinking is not one of those times. A passing police officer found a 1985 Oldsmobile Cutlass on its side in a ditch alongside the westbound on-ramp to I-90 at the Crocker Road interchange around 12:49 a.m. on Sept. 2. Fannie Thomas, 19, of Cleveland, said she was driving the car, which belongs to the father of the 27-year-old passenger, Prince Brown of Lorain. Thomas was charged with DUI, underage drinking, driving after underage drinking, failure to control, and certain acts prohibited (for having another woman's driver's license on her). Westlake Police also discovered that she had an outstanding warrant from North …

If you've ever used a GPS navigator in your car, there may have been a time where it gave you imperfect directions. A 26-year-old Broadview Heights woman tried to blame driving the wrong way on I-90 on her GPS. It didn't work. Jacqueline Kovach was stopped by Westlake Police at 2:34 a.m. on Aug. 26 near the Columbia Road overpass, driving west in the eastbound lanes. She told police she knew it was the wrong way, but drove anyway because the GPS told her to. Kovach was found to have a blood-alcohol level of .111 and was arrested for drunk driving, open container (a can of beer), no seatbelt and willful and wanton disregard for safety. Kovach reportedly then complained that police should be arresting drunks who are worse than her.

A Westlake woman is being charged after her drinking got out of hand and led to her hitting her sons. The father of the boys, both of whom are in their teens, called Westlake police for a welfare check around 8:50 p.m. on July 24. The boys had called their father, who is divorced from their mother, telling him they'd left the house because their mother was drunk, that she'd punched the younger boy in the head and slapped the elder one, and had also threatened the older one with a kitchen utensil. When police arrived, they found the mother backing her car out of the garage. Her blood-alcohol content turned out to to be .145 and she was arrested for DUI and domestic violence. A 31-year-old Elyria woman is facing charges of driving under the influence and driving under suspension. Westlake police were called when another driver saw her driving erratically just before 5:30 p.m. on May 3. When police signaled to the women to pull the car over on Detroit Road, the woman drove onto a treelawn. Police then discovered the woman's two small children were in the car with her. The woman told police she was taking several prescription medications. A blood sample was drawn and is being tested by the County Medical Examiner's Office. The results of the blood test will determine whether or not child endangering charges will be added, said Westlake police captain Guy Turner. The children were turned over to their grandmother …

Officers hope the kits will discourage drinking and driving after the big game.
The Westlake Police Department is giving away the makings for a safe Super Bowl party, and a safe trip home. "As a party host, you are responsible for the actions of your guests," said Westlake Police Sgt. Jerry Vogel. "You can be held civilly liable if someone leaves your party, gets behind the wheel and hurts themselves or someone else in a crash." Vogel also noted that impaired driving can start with just one drink, and that a guest does not have to be visibly impaired to need a ride home. "Driving skills and abilities are impaired in most people long before they exhibit visible signs of drunkenness," he said. The kits include a football-shaped bowl to collect guests' car keys, a recipe guide for non-alcoholic drinks, five drink …
