POLL: Dick's, Walmart Halt Gun Sales After Sandy Hook Shootings

Semi-automatic rifles removed from stores and online shopping sites. Do you think this is the right decision?

In the wake of Friday's mass murder at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., two major retailers are responding. Dick's Sporting Goods has removed all guns from its store nearest to Newtown, and has stopped sales of some semi-automatic rifles, described by Dick's as "modern sporting rifles" in its stores nationwide, including the Dick's at Crocker Park. “We are extremely saddened by the unspeakable tragedy that occurred last week in Newtown, CT, and our hearts go out to the victims and their families, and to the entire community,” a statement on the Dick’s website said. Walmart has removed the Bushmaster Patrolman's Carbine M4A3 Rifle from its online store. What do you think? Should these guns be off the shelves for good? Or is …

Update: Drugs and Alcohol Not Factor in Crash at Dick's

Preliminary investigations have revealed new information about the driver that crashed into Dick's Sporting Goods Thursday afternoon.

Westlake police investigating the crash at Dick's Sporting Goods Thursday afternoon say that drugs and alcohol were not a factor. According to Cpt. Guy Turner, 73-year-old James Buchman of Westlake lost control of his car on Crocker Park Boulevard, jumped the sidewalk and hit a planter in front of the store. He then reversed, and drove about 30 feet into Dick's. Buchman was wearing his seatbelt at the time and was taken to St. John Medical Center as a precaution. No one was injured. Police will request that the Bureau of Motor Vehicles re-examines his fitness to drive. “We regret the incident that took place at our Westlake store this afternoon," said a Dick's Sporting Goods representative in an email. "The store will remain closed for the…

Elderly Man Drives Into Dick's Sporting Goods

A 73-year-old Westlake man drove into the front of Dick's on Thursday afternoon.

A 73-year-old Westlake man hit the front of Dick's Sporting Goods at Crocker Park at about 2:30 p.m. Thursday afternoon. "An old man just ran into Dick's Sporting Goods with his car...," said a woman at Crocker Park in a 911 call. "He's inside the whole store right now." A Dick's employee told dispatchers that the car was "pretty far" inside the store. "They’re toward the middle," he said. The driver's condition is unknown at this time, but no one in or near the store was hit or injured, said Westlake Police Cpt. Guy Turner. The driver was taken to St. John Medical Center. An employee told dispatchers that a nurse on the scene was tending to the driver. Another said that the driver was in the car, but not moving, and not feeling well. The …
