Kids and Social Networking: What Parents Should Know

Westlake City Schools hosting event to help parents understand social technology

There's a lot for parents to worry about as their children start going online and using cellphones. Do you know what they're doing, besides taking lots of duckface selfies with the phone camera? Help your child understand the new world they're getting into. Westlake City Schools’ Health & Safety Committee is hosting a Social Networking & Young Children Program from 7-8 p.m. Jan. 31 at Parkside Intermediate School. Randy Kimbo, of the FBI Citizens Community Outreach program, will lead the program. He will discuss cell phones, social media and networking, how predators "groom" children, live chat, cyberbullying, sexting, and "follow me" cell phone apps.  The free program is geared for parents of children in grades K through 6, but anyone is …

Schools Get More Power in Fight Against Bullying

Westlake City Schools given more leeway in using incidents on social media like Facebook and Twitter to crack down on bullies

Bullying has become a front-burner issue for school systems. As technology such as smartphones and social media like Facebook and Twitter are tools used in bullying, something know as cyberbullying, schools are trying to find the balance between being proactive and stepping outside of their authority. Earlier this year, Ohio lawmakers passed the Jessica Logan Law, which requires districts to set anti-bullying policies that include cyberbullying, and also gives districts more leeway in dealing with cyberbullying incidents outside the school day.  Westlake City Schools are refining their own anti-bullying rules.
