The city has undergone extensive changes since 1986. Here are the Top 10, according the the planning director.

Bob Parry, the recently-retired planning and economic development, took advantage of his last council meeting several weeks ago to highlight some of the most important developments since he took office in 1986. Parry retired on April 19. In David Letterman style, he presented a “Top 10” list of changes the city has undergone while he was the director, from adding bike lanes to the construction of Crocker Park, the city’s Bicentennial and Westlake in Bloom.  Here’s how he ranks the Top 10 projects. 10: Westlake Bicentennial Project: “It was a very successful program and it involve Tralee,” Parry said of one of Westlake’s two sister-cities. The Bicentennial in 2011 included a great ball drop and various events throughout the year. 9. …

Crocker Park Farmers Market Relocates Due to AG Construction

The Mange also relocated.

Construction of the American Greetings new world headquarters means the annual Farmers Market at Crocker Park has relocated. Emma Anderson, of the North Union Farmers Market said the market will move back to its 2011 location to the pad across from Trader Joe’s and First Watch restaurant on Market Street. The Farmers Market, which moved indoors for the winter, is back outside. It has become a perennial favorite at Crocker Park and is now in its 9th year. The Market opened Saturday, April 13, and will run every Saturday through Dec. 21 from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. The “Mange” has also been relocated. “The Mange is a small urban garden and (growers) donate food raised there to a food bank,” Anderson said. “Some fruits, vegetables and they are taken …

Ice Rink, Concert Area, Farmers Market Possible for Market Square & Crocker Commons

City approves conceptual plan for civic area in Crocker Park.

Crocker Park got the go-ahead to add more “play space” to the area, when the city’s Planning Commission approved a conceptual plan for Market Square & Crocker Commons. Jack Bialosky of Bialosky + Partners presented a PowerPoint presentation to Planning Commission members that when completed, shows a J-shaped area that is flexible enough to build an outdoor concert area, ice-skating rink, farmers market or even an outdoor gallery in the space between Market and Vine streets. Half of the space would have a flexible-use hardscape while the other half would be green space for those looking to relax or simply throw a Frisbee. “You could imagine perhaps food trucks in this space, perhaps a carnival,” Bialosky said. “And plenty of room on the …

Proposed Bike Plan Would Connect Large Portions of Westlake

Businesses, parks and city facilities would all be accessible by bike.

Westlake cyclists, rejoice. The city’s planning commission approved a citywide bike plan Monday that will connect major areas of the city, including hotspots such as the city's recreation center and Porter Library. The approval also means the city will be able to pursue federal funding for the project. Planning Director Bob Parry outlined the plan (see attached PDF) that would essentially create a network of roadways throughout the city, Parry said. Residents were previously queried as to where in the city they would like to see bike paths and which roadways they would use. The study was conducted by a grant from the Northeast Ohio Areawide Coordinating Agency. The plan was completed in February of 2012. When community members were asked …

Assault on a Police Officer, Spitting in a Cruiser: Two Out of Three Drunks Misbehave

Crocker Park trio forget to follow the law... on several fronts.

Three people were arrested after a disturbance on March 27 at 6:57 p.m. outside a Crocker Park Boulevard business. When officers tried to arrest an intoxicated 36-year-old Cleveland man, he resisted. Then, a 41-year-old Cleveland woman decided to aggravate the situation; she interfered with the arrest by hitting an officer with her purse. After refusing to identify herself she added an obstructing official business charge to her assault on a peace officer charge.  The male faces DCI and resisting arrest charges. He complained of undefined heart trouble as diagnosed by his doctor and was taken to St. John Medical Center where he was treated and released. He then continued his bad behavior by spitting all over the interior of the police …

'Dark Knight' Suspect Gets 6 Months

North Ridgeville man brought weapons into Crocker Park theater.

Scott Smith, 38,  has been sentenced to six months in prison for bringing a loaded gun, ammunition and knives to a showing of the latest Batman movie in Westlake. Smith, of North Ridgeville, was sentenced in Cuyahoga County Court on March 21. Common Pleas Court Judge Kathleen Ann Sutula said she was troubled that Smith, 38, would take weapons that he wasn't allowed to conceal into a theater where they weren't allowed to go, according to Cleveland.com. She said she was sending a message to the public that that kind of behavior would not be allowed. Smith carried a Glock 9mm semi-automatic pistol, 4 knives and various medical supplies into Regal Cinemas in Crocker Park to watch Dark Knight Rises last August. The incident occured two weeks …

Forget the Snow, Farmer’s Market at Crocker Park in Full Swing

Market open on Saturday from 9 a.m. - noon

Spring is right around the corner, but so is the Farmer’s Market. Despite yesterday’s snow and cold, those seeking a little bit of summer in their week can head over to Crocker Park’s North Union Farmers Market Indoor Winter Market for fresh grown veggies and interesting finds. “It’s indoors at Crocker Park through March 16, from 9 a.m.  – noon,” General Manager Emma Anderson said. In warmer weather, the popular outdoor Market at Crocker Park offers buyers plenty of Ohio grown and manufactured products. Located next to Aladdin’s Eatery, in the space that housed Santa’s Workshop in December, the quarters are close, but it gets the job done. “We have more than 20 vendors selling meats, cheeses and root vegetables,” Anderson said. “It’s a lot…
