Columbia Interchange Plans Move Forward

Council approves hiring design firm

Westlake City Council has approved hiring a firm to design plans for a renovation of the Columbia Road interchange. The city will hire Hatch Mott MacDonald LLC for the design project. Ward 1 councilman Edward Hack voiced his objections to the hiring at last week's council meeting at City Hall. "My concern is that it puts time, effort and moneys into an intersection where there aren't major problems," Hack said, adding Crocker Road needs to be addressed. City engineer Robert Kelly said the city would be spending about $80,000 for the design. The remaining $400,000 would be coming from state safety funds. Council chair Michael Killeen pointed out that state money can't be diverted from the project it was granted for to something else. "It's …

What's the Worst Intersection in Westlake?

Take our poll and vent a little road rage

With growth like Westlake has had, comes more cars and more traffic. Which means that some parts of town can be a pain in the rear to drive. The city's moving forward with a plan to revamp the Columbia Road interchange at Interstate 90, and has a proposal to hire a firm to design plans on Thursday's city council meeting agenda. The intersection of Bradley Road and Detroit Road will be updated this year. We're looking for your input. What are the worst intersections in Westlake? How would you fix them? Take our poll and share your views in the comments.

If you are looking for dangerous, hands down Canterbury/Center Ridge!! If it's just for inconvenience caused by poor drivers and loads of congestion, got to be Crocker/Detroit which helps to create Crocker/Clemens and vice versa.   more ›

Columbia Interchange Project on Council Agenda

City hopes to fix problems at interchange, Columbia and Detroit

A step towards a revamped Columbia Road interchange at Interstate 90 is on the agenda for Thursday's city council meeting at 8 p.m. at City Hall. There will be a second reading of an ordinance authorizing Mayor Dennis Clough to enter an agreement with Hatch Mott MacDonald LLC for designing the plans for the interchange. Either the ordinance passes on declaring an emergency, or there is a third reading at the June 21 council meeting City engineer Bob Kelly detailed changes the city hoped to make to the interchange in a recent interview. Moving the eastbound ramps a little to the north and changing the westbound off-ramps are designed to streamline traffic on Columbia and help keep traffic from impacting Detroit Road. Is this the worst …

Big Changes Planned at Columbia Interchange

Project designed to improve traffic flow on Columbia Road from Detroit Road to interchange north to Sperry Road

How many times have you been caught in a traffic jam trying to go north from the Columbia Road-Detroit Road intersection, either to get to Interstate 90 or points north? A $7 million project is in the design stages that will address the problems in that area, said city engineer Bob Kelly. Westlake is waiting on federal funding before beginning the project, Kelly said. The placement of the on- and off-ramps for I-90 create problems, Kelly said. The ramps on 90 east are too close to Detroit Road and traffic can end up jammed to the Columbia-Detroit intersection. Also, the 90 west off-ramp for Columbia Road northbound ends at Columbia Road just a few hundred feet from the Sperry Road intersection with Columbia Road. Plans are to get rid of …

7 million dollars wasted! I think that the new traffic light will slow things down almost as much. I drive through there daily, during rush hour, with little delay. I agree that it's not an ideal design. Proper timing of the existing lights would improve flow. THAT is a science that Westlake has yet to master. There are other intersections which could be improved greatly, simply by adjusting …   more ›
