Prince of Peace Cell Tower Shelved Indefinitely

City will review previous sites.

The long-debated Verizon cell tower issue at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church was again taken off an agenda—this time for six months. Planning Director Bob Parry said the city received a letter dated March 28 from the legal group representing Verizon requesting the item be removed and postponed indefinitely. The item was scheduled to be voted on April 1. Parry said a consultant was reviewing other options available besides the church location. “Our consulting engineer had a lot of questions,” Parry said before the April 1 Planning Commission meeting. “We’re re-examining sites from past.” He told the audience at the meeting the item would be shelved. “We haven’t received all the information back by (the Westlake) consultant,” Parry said. …

Prince of Peace Cell Tower Options Reviewed Tonight

Council, Planning Commission have both delayed motions in recent months.

The disputed 100-ft. Verizon cell tower at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church on Center Ridge Road will be up for discussion tonight after being referred back to Planning Commission for additional discussion. Planning Commission approved the tower last October, which if built will sit as close as 300 - 500 feet to residential homes. Most recently, City Council referred the item back to planning commission on Feb. 7 without taking a vote. Homeowner Laurie Frankito of nearby Stonegate Circle said on March 28 she would be in attendance and again speak against the tower. She and her husband James have been vocal opponents of the tower, which could be built 500 feet from her home, if approved. She said other viable options including property near …

Planning Commission Approves 195’ Cell Tower for Roman Park

Monopole is sought by city of Cleveland for communications.

The city of Westlake moved ahead with a new 195’ cell tower in Roman Park on Ranney Parkway, after planning commission approved the tower at the lower height. “We received and reviewed the revised plan today,” Planning Coordinator Bob Parry said at the March 4 Planning Commission meeting. “It’s now under 200 feet (in height); it doesn’t require lighting.” Previous plans for the monopole, which is being sought by the city of Cleveland for emergency services, requested approval of a 235’ high monopole. The pole was to expand an 800 MHZ frequency Cleveland safety network in Cuyahoga county. The tower would be used for communications with other city safety forces, airport back up, water department readings and pollution control. Council still …

No Vote On Cell Tower

Council will send plan back to planning commission to review new information.

A scheduled public hearing, attended by cell tower detractors and supporters, was canceled Feb. 7 after council opted to send the issue back to planning commission for further review. Council did not vote on the plan. Approximately 35 individuals had attended the meeting and hearing Thursday night. Verizon is seeking to place a cell tower on Prince of Peace Lutheran Church property, but has received resistance from an anti-tower group. On Feb. 5, the city of Westlake received correspondence from the firm representing New Par d/b/a Verizon Wireless explaining how it came to arrive at the Prince of Peace Church location. The letter said that it had received many complaints from residents about lack of cell phone service in the area dating …

Prince of Peace Cell Tower Hearing, Vote is Tonight

Couple vows to fight against tower.

Residents will have a final before council decides on Feb. 7 whether or not a cell tower should be allowed on the Prince of Peace Lutheran Church’s property on Center Ridge Road. The issue, being fought by several Westlake residents including James and Laurie Frankito who live near where the tower could be built, was tabled in January. "I've got mixed feelings," Laurie Frankito said outside Council chambers after the vote was delayed. "I was hoping it would be voted down, but it wasn't approved." The Verizon tower was first proposed in September of 2012, and planning commission voted to recommend plans to build a 100-foot tower on the Prince of Peace Lutheran Church property in early December. Council’s vote was first delayed during its …
