Cell Phone Tower Vote Postponed Until February

City Council took the discussion off the agenda last week.

Residents who are interested in hearing more about a proposed cell phone tower in the southwestern part of Westlake will have to wait—City Council’s vote has been postponed until February. The Verizon tower was first proposed in September, and planning commission voted to recommend plans to build a 100-foot tower on the Prince of Peace Lutheran Church property in early December. But some members of the community have expressed concerns about having a tower so close to residents’ homes, and the city is listening. Council’s vote was first delayed during its Jan. 3 meeting. It was again postponed during the meeting on Jan. 17. The city’s Planning Director, Robert Parry, said council wanted to give the applicant time to report on alternate …

No Vote Yet on Cell Phone Tower at Prince of Peace Church

City Council tables matter until alternatives are explored

The vote on a proposed cell phone tower to be built at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church was put off by Westlake City Council at Thursday night's meeting. Council members wanted more time for Verizon, which would be building the tower, to further explore alternatives sites away from residential areas. The planned tower would be 100 feet tall, and 300 feet away from the nearest residence. The matter will be brought up again at the Jan. 17 meeting. More than two dozen people showed up for the public hearing before the meeting. Residents James Frankito, who lives a few hundred feet from where the tower would be built, told Council that he had spoken with a representative from the U.S. Postal Service, who told him on Wednesday they would be open…

Cell Phone Tower Sparks Couple's Activism

Laurie and James Frankito are fighting the proposed cell phone tower at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church.

Not the holidays, not the flu, could stop James and Laurie Frankito from fighting the proposed cell phone tower at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church. The couple came away with a temporary reprieve Thursday, as City Council tabled the vote on the tower until alternative sites were explored. "I've got mixed feelings," Laurie Frankito said outside Council chambers after the vote was delayed. "I was hoping it would be voted down, but it wasn't approved." Both Laurie and James spoke at the public hearing on the tower plans before the City Council meeting. Their concerns included negative impact on their ability to sell their home and other homes in the neighborhood. The tower would be built 300 feet away from their property line, Laurie said.  "I…

Cell Phone Tower Hearing, Vote Set for Tonight

Proposed tower will be at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church

Plans for a cell phone tower at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church will get a public hearing before a vote at Thursday night's meeting of City Council at City Hall. The public hearing will be at 8 p.m., before the start of the council meeting. A third reading of the ordinance on the tower is on the agenda the meeting, followed by a vote. Westlake's Planning Commission approved the plans for the tower in December. The 100-foot tower would be built on the western end of the church property. It would be almost 300 feet away from the nearest residence. The tower was propsed because of poor cell phone service in the southwestern part of town. At a public meeting in October, Verizon attorney Bob Grant said other options were explored, such as parks…

Again, I don't have a problem with my service, and I live right in the area that's affected. And while this is apparently a problem for people, there have to be better solutions than this. There are other options, and Verizon really ought to be looking for find the best possible solution, not the easiest. They themselves even say they'd really rather put the tower someone else. At the hearing, it…   more ›

Cell Phone Tower Plan Approved by Planning Commission

Plans to build a new tower on the Prince of Peace Lutheran Church’s property will now go to City Council.

The measure will now go to City Council. The proposed 100-foot tower would be located on the Prince of Peace Lutheran Church’s property. Cell Phone Tower Plans Draw Concern

Verizon tower may be built on Prince of Peace Lutheran Church property

A part of southwestern Westlake that has long been plagued by poor cell phone service has been presented with a solution. Residents aren't yet sure about it, however. They expressed hopes and concerns at a meeting at City Hall last week organized by Ward 4 City Councilman Michael O'Donnell. About two dozen people attended. Verizon has entered into an agreement with Prince of Peace Lutheran Church to lease a small piece of land in the western end of the church's property to build a 100-foot-high cell phone tower. Bob Grant, an attorney for Verizon, said that the company has been trying to find a solution for the dead zone in that part of town for six years. "As much as we'd love to avoid having a tower near a residential area, it's also …
