Dozen honored at May 16 ceremony.
Twelve Westlake High School students made public their college and athletic choices May 16 at a ceremony in the Performing Arts Center at Westlake High School. The students were introduced by Westlake Athletic Director Tony Cippolone. “They deserve this kind of day,” Cippolone said. “With their teammates have had a great run here in the past several years.” Included in the 12 was Alexis Tamas who will be rowing for Eastern Michigan University. Although she did not play for Westlake, Cippolone noted that she still represented the high school. Jamie Lackner: College of Wooster-Baseball Lackner, the son of Ernie and Karen, will play baseball for the Scots of the College of Wooster. Awards given to those who have contributed to the district.
Demon Student-Athletes, Community Members and one coach received end of the season awards today at a May 17 ceremony at Westlake High School. The following awards were presented: OHSAA State Award for Sportsmanship, Ethics and Integrity: Cathy Axcell This award is given to a person within the school or community who continually exemplifies good sportsmanship, a person who is a positive role model for others, a person who reflects a high level of ethics and integrity in dealing with students and the interscholastic athletic program, a person who supports and demonstrates positive values and a person who has contributed to the well-being of the youth of our high school. Westlake grad competed in Lima, Peru this past weekend.
Sheldon Stuckart, a member of Team USA Weightlifting, placed 12th in the Junior Worlds in his first time out, competing in the 85kg session. He represented the USA at the Junior Worlds in Lima, Peru last week, finishing with a 283 kg total. According to the Team USA website, competing in his first international competition, lifted in the Junior World Championships 85 kg B session May 8. Stuckart, a 2011 Westlake High School graduate opened with a successful 125 kg snatch, missed 130 kg on his second attempt and then made the same weight on his third. In the clean & jerk, Stuckart opened with a successful 153 kg, moved up to 158 kg on his second, but was turned down due to press out, then missed his third with 160kg, cleaning the weight …

Stop is ahead of Cleveland debut challenge at Baldwin Wallace University.
AMP1, a team of stand-up (non-wheelchair) amputee basketball players, are heading to Cleveland for some inspiring hoops and will be making a stop in Westlake for a clinic April 24. The clinic is part of an all-day affair surrounding the team’s 2013 AMP1 (www.amp1basketball.com) Basketball Challenge: “Nothin’ But Net! Hoopin’ It Up For Disability Awareness” at Baldwin Wallace University (BW) on Wednesday at 7 p.m. There will be a whole day of activities surrounding the basketball game starting at 10 a.m. with practice at BW followed by an assembly at St. Angela’s School in Fairview Park and then a Youth Challenge at The Gathering Place – West (800 Sharon Dr.) in Westlake.
