Historical Society to Bury 200 Years of Westlake in Time Capsule

The Westlake Historical Society is taking suggestions for the time capsule, which will be buried in November.

To celebrate 200 years of Westlake’s history, the historical society is leaving behind some history for the future generations.

The society is now in the process of putting together a time capsule to be buried under the flagpole at on Nov. 17. And this time capsule is built to last. Historical Society President Lysa Stanton said it will be equipped with argon gas and made of steel, and then placed inside a vault before it’s buried.

Although the capsule will be sealed for 100 years, a sister time capsule will be opened in 2036 and every 25 years after that to make sure that all of the technology is still functional.

“They’re going to have some similar stuff, but we want to have a way in which people can still get at the technology,” Stanton said. “If I put a jump drive in there, they might not be able to read that in 100 years. In 25 years, we can open the sister time capsule and update it.”

The historical society is asking for ideas and suggestions for the time capsule, which will have all kinds of things from a copy of the Westlake charter to popular CDs or DVDs and other items that represent the year 2011, as well as Westlake's 200-year history.

“If people can think of thing they think should be in the capsule, we’re open to suggestions and we’ll fill it until it’s full,” Stanton said.
