Cathy Schultz Receives Library Award for Years of Volunteer Work

The Westlake resident was selected for the 2012 Myrna Chelko Volunteer Award.

Westlake resident Cathy Schultz has received the 2012 Myrna Chelko Volunteer Award from Westlake Porter Public Library. The award was announced at the annual Volunteer Award Recognition reception. It is named for the late Myrna Chelko, and is given to the volunteer who epitomizes the spirit of volunteerism as demonstrated by Chelko during her years as a library volunteer.

Schultz was selected as this year’s recipient in recognition of her years as a Friends of Porter Public Library Board member, the number of volunteer responsibilities she has taken on over the years, and her dedication and enthusiasm.

Schultz first joined the Friends of Porter Library’s board of trustees in 1993. Since then she has held a variety of offices and coordinated several events. She was a Friends trustee and the Board’s Vice President for two years, coordinated Friends programs from 1993-1994, edited the Friends newsletter in 1996, and coordinated the Hospitality committee and social events in 1999. She has coordinated the trees and wreaths fundraiser and the Ice Cream Social in the past, and volunteers in the Friends’ gift store, Portables. In 2011 Schultz logged 209 volunteer hours, bringing her total volunteer hours to 10,826.

Each year over 10,000 volunteer hours are logged at Westlake Porter Public Library. Volunteers shelve materials, staff the Reception Desk, deliver library materials to homebound Westlake residents, and help the Friends of Porter Library raise funds by working at Portables, the Book Nook, the annual Book Sale, and other fundraisers.
