A Day in the Life of a Young Mom … With Breast Cancer

What happens when a young mom is diagnosed with breast cancer?

What time do I pick Sarah up from school?

Where did I put the grocery list?

What do you mean I was supposed to send in a healthy snack today? I thought that was next Tuesday…

 I have a committee meeting at 5, I’ll be home late…

When did second graders start getting so much homework?

What am I supposed to make for dinner?

If I put the kids to bed at 7 I will have 3 hours to proof that report for work…

And now you tell me I have BREAST CANCER? SERIOUSLY? I don’t have TIME for breast cancer.

While the majority of women who are diagnosed with breast cancer are in their 50’s and 60’s, there are still many women in their 20’s and 30’s who get diagnosed as well and these women have unique needs. Finding a support group where there are other women in similar circumstances can be tricky. That is why we have a specific support group for young women at The Gathering Place in Westlake, Ohio. Some of the women that attend this group have tried other support groups and commented that they were the youngest ones in the room and felt different and out of place. They wanted to meet other women who could relate to their stories.

Compared to older women, young women generally face more aggressive breast cancer. This can lead to difficulty coping and increased fear. There are also unique challenges for young women with breast cancer including the possibility of early menopause, effects on fertility, questions about pregnancy after diagnosis and concerns about body image. Finding support at the Group for Young Women with Breast Cancer can help young women to cope, reduce stress, feel connected and get support from others who have walked in their shoes. The group meets on the first Tuesday of each month from 6:30 to 8:00pm. Please call Susan Marinac at 216-595-9546 for more information. Visit www.touchedbycancer.org for a listing of all the programs provided for individuals and families coping with cancer.
