Margot Shumway's Quest for Gold Starts Today

Westlake native competing in women's double sculls in 2012 Olympics

Margot Shumway of Westlake begins competition in the 2012 Summer Olympics in London on Monday with the qualifying heats in women's double sculls.

32, and her partner, 29-year-old Sarah Trowbridge of Guilford, Conn., are the only American team competing in the event. They will be competing in the second heat Monday against teams from Poland, Australia, Germany and Ukraine.

Rowing, along with the canoe sprint events, is being held at Eton Dorney Rowing Centre, about 25 miles west of London.

Repechages, where first-round losers get a second chance to advance, will be Tuesday, July 31. The finals for women's double sculls will be Friday, August 3.

According to her mother Julia's blog, Shumway and the rowers are staying about 40 minutes from Eton Dorney at the Royal Holloway Guest House.
