Mount Union QB Nominated for Award Won By Mannings, RGIII

A Westlake resident and college quarterback has been nominated for a prestigious off-the-field college football award, one previously one a number of professional football players including two Super Bowl champion. 

Mount Union quarterback Kevin Burke who lives in Westlake, was just announced as a nominee for the 2013 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team.

Burke previously played for St. Edward High School.

Although most college football players are remembered for their accomplishments on the field, players nominated for this award are honored for helping others. 

"Through the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team®, Allstate and the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) recognize a select group of college football players who have made a commitment to enriching the lives of others while contributing to the greater good of their communities," a press release announcing Burke's nomination said.

Burke boasts an impressive resume of community service accomplishments, which include: 

  • Organizing a fundraising effort with the football team for Mount Union’s Relay for Life walk
  • Packaging food for low-income families
  • Carving pumpkins for a community event and preparing coloring kits for children

This year includes 151 nominees. A final roster of 22 award recipients - comprised of 11 players from the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision and 11 players from the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision, Divisions II, III, and the NAIA - will be named in September.  

Past members of the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team include Super Bowl champion quarterbacks, Peyton and Eli Manning, ESPN analyst Matt Stinchcomb and Heisman Trophy winning quarterbacks Robert Griffin III and Tim Tebow.
