8 Student Athletes, Coach and Community Member Honored By WHS

Awards given to those who have contributed to the district.

Demon Student-Athletes, Community Members and one coach received end of the season awards today at a May 17 ceremony at Westlake High School. The following awards were presented:

OHSAA State Award for Sportsmanship, Ethics and Integrity: Cathy Axcell

This award is given to a person within the school or community who continually exemplifies good sportsmanship, a person who is a positive role model for others, a person who reflects a high level of ethics and integrity in dealing with students and the interscholastic athletic program, a person who supports and demonstrates positive values and a person who has contributed to the well-being of the youth of our high school.

Axcell was honored for her commitment to the the football team, the hockey team and the baseball team. She has also led campaigns for the district for the bond issue that will provide our great new schools and the recent levy campaign.

National Federation of High Schools National Award of Excellence: Rachael Collins, Shawn Turk

This award is distributed to one male and one female who has displayed exemplary sportsmanship, ethics and integrity.

The male selection is Shawn Turk. Turk was a multi-sport athlete in football and basketball and was selected All SWC First Team in both sports. He will be attending Ohio University in the fall.

The female selection is Rachael Collins. Collins earned seven letters in cross country, basketball and track and field.  She was captain of the girls basketball team and was a Greater Cleveland All-Star this past season.  She will be attending and playing at the College of Wooster.

Bob Hersman Coach of the Year Award: Head Football Coach Mark Campo

This award is named after Bob Hersman, the Westlake City School District’s former athletic director who passed away a number of years ago.

The recipients for this award are nominated and voted on by his/her peers. Recipients must have outstanding coaching and teaching skills, outstanding contributions to the athletic department, positive contributions to athletes in our district and positive contributions to staff and program development.

Hersman was described as a person who was able to accomplish something that nobody thought could be done, changing the culture of a team and school and “demanding a lot from his players in order to achieve a lot for his players.”

Campo led the Demons to their first SWC title in over 25 years and their first home playoff game in history. He was named SWC Coach of the Year.

OHSAA Archie Griffin Award: Nick Wertman, Maddie Sandhu

Named after Ohio State’s two time Heisman Trophy Winner, this award is given annually to a male and female student-athlete who have been outstanding in their efforts to promote sportsmanship in their school and community.

Wertman was a captain of the boys soccer team that qualified for the Regional Championships, the Plain Dealer Player of the Year, the SWC Player of the year, and an Academic All Ohio selection, he has been active in helping with Youth Soccer and participating in Leadership Challenge.

Sandhu was the captain on soccer team and a three-varsity starter.  She was selected as the Defensive MVP, 1st Team All SWC, All Greater Cleveland, and Academic All Ohio selection, volunteers with youth programs.

OHSAA Scholar Athletes: Liz Kobe, Logan Paul

This award given to one female and one male student who combine academic achievement with multiple letters in high school sports.

Paul earned letters in both wrestling and football and was named SWC MVP in football, along with taking 5th place in the state in wrestling.  In addition, he will graduate with a 4.7 GPA and will be attending Ohio University next fall

Kobe  was named as a first team All SWC Selection in Basketball along with earning varsity letters in Cross Country, Basketball and Track.  Liz will graduate with a 5.1 GPA and will be ranked #1 in the class. She will be attending the University of Pennsylvania next fall.
