WHS Senior Appointed to Air Force Academy

Stephanie Freeman is one of only 1,200 seniors nationwide,

senior Stephanie Freeman received an appointment to the U.S. Air Force Academy following a nomination from Congressman Dennis Kucinich. 

Stephanie is one of only 1,200 high school seniors nationally to receive an appointment out of 12,000 qualified candidates. She and her family began the application process in December 2010 and learned of her appointment on March 29.

The Air Force Academy offers a four-year program that graduates each cadet with a Bachelor of Science degree and a commission as a second lieutenant in the Air Force.

Stephanie has a GPA above 4.6, a Varsity letter in cross country, a choir club officer, a band section leader. She is part of the Westlake Area Youth Group, Kiwanis and Key Club, and volunteers as a homework tutor at

Stephanie’s father, WHS Principal Tim Freeman, said his daughter has talked about becoming an Air Force pilot and attending the Air Force Academy since the sixth grade.

“She’s interested in the space program and is pursuing an aerospace engineering degree,” Freeman said. “She set a goal way back in elementary school and has worked since then to see it through. We’re very proud of her.”
