Update: Carjacking Suspects Are Brothers

Nearby Bassett School was in lockdown.

This morning's carjacking incident is apparently a family act, police say. Two brothers are in custody after this morning's carjacking and crash on Detroit Road, which led to a lockdown at Bassett School as police searched for the suspects. 

In a news release, Westlake police said, "The second suspect has been identified as the 14-year-old brother of the suspect in custody of Avon PD. Little brother (of Cleveland) will be filed on in Juvenile Court for drug charges related to the suspected crack cocaine found on his person and receiving stolen property for the car that was taken in Cleveland."

Police said, "Preliminary findings are that he may be an accomplice of the other suspect and may have been in Westlake trying to find his partner in crime after dumping another vehicle that was stolen in Cleveland."

At 6:43 a.m., Avon police received a report of a carjacked Ford Taurus, which later collided with a Ford pickup truck driven by a 54-year-old Westlake man at the intersection of Bassett and Detroit.

An Avon woman was injured during the original carjacking.

Then police said, "The male suspect fled on foot and forced his way into a nearby apartment; he fought with Westlake PD officers there, was tasered, and was taken to by the Westlake Fire Department. He is in the custody of Avon police. The pickup driver was also transported to St. John Medical Center for face, back, and arm injuries."

A second suspect fled the scene on foot at about 7:20 a.m., which was when went into lockdown. The lockdown was lifted at about 9:15 a.m.

Numerous agencies assisted with the carjacking, including Avon, Rocky River, North Olmsted, and North Ridgeville police.
