Lee Burneson Middle School Students Land Top Honors at LEGO Olympiad

Teams win 1st-, 2nd-place trophies

Westlake middle school students had a strong showing at the Lorain Community College Lego Olympiad last month.

Lee Burneson Middle School sent teams to the competition, during which students build robots and machines from LEGOs, April 12.

Peter Slater and Chris Slater won 1st place for their Operational Draw Bot, and Sneha Ramachandran and Jackson Liang won 2nd place in the Open Division for their LEGO motor-operated clock.

The eighth grade team was also selected to be interviewed on the college's TV station and website.

The teams are coached by teacher Judy McMasters.

Other Lee Burneson participants included:

  • Sean Freeman, David Wanhainen and Zach Wise, who built an underwater vehicle for the Theme Division; 
  • Ryan Karpuszka and Erik Hoke, who built a robot for the Computer Controlled Division; 
  • Greg Phillips and Ben Sposet, who entered the Open Division with a car wash controlled by Lego motors; 
  • Bradley Katcher and Mark Sargent, who created a Lego version of a vending machine.
