Kids and Social Networking: What Parents Should Know

Westlake City Schools hosting event to help parents understand social technology

There's a lot for parents to worry about as their children start going online and using cellphones.

Do you know what they're doing, besides taking lots of duckface selfies with the phone camera?

Help your child understand the new world they're getting into. Westlake City Schools’ Health & Safety Committee is hosting a Social Networking & Young Children Program from 7-8 p.m. Jan. 31 at Parkside Intermediate School.

Randy Kimbo, of the FBI Citizens Community Outreach program, will lead the program. He will discuss cell phones, social media and networking, how predators "groom" children, live chat, cyberbullying, sexting, and "follow me" cell phone apps.

The free program is geared for parents of children in grades K through 6, but anyone is welcome to attend.

Childcare is provided for children ages 4-12 by Westlake High Leadership Challenge students. Advance registration for childcare is required by Jan. 28, no walk-ins will be allowed. Email mcginty@wlake.org to register.
