7 WHS Students Earn Awards from John Carroll Competition

60th annual Northeastern Ohio Science and Engineering Fair awards ceremony held recently

John Carroll University served as host of the 60th annual Northeastern Ohio Science and Engineering Fair awards ceremony held recently in the Gymnasium RecPlex.

Seven Westlake High School engineering students  students took honors from first to third place in various categories.

Senior Jacob Lemanowicz won the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers specialty category award and the $150 cash prize for his pressure sensitive iPhone case design that generates electricity.

Senior Jacob Hoffman earned a second-place award from the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineers and a $75 cash prize for his hybrid geothermal and ICF block heating and cooling system design.

Senior Theodore Poulous won second place in the engineering category and a $25 cash prize for his balancing Segway, as well as the Honorable Mention Award from Rockwell Automation and the Certificate of Achievement Award from the Army.

Junior Robert Slater won the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers specialty category award and the $100 cash prize for his design that creates electricity from a computer's waste heat.

Junior Katherine Garruto won the achievement medal and a $50 cash prize as the Naval Science Award Recipient for her climate controlled ceiling fan design.

Junior Chris Tsuei won a certificate from the Antique Automobile Association of America - Northern Ohio Chapter for his regenerative energy design for a soap box derby car.

Junior Krish Shah won 3rd place in the Chemistry Category. He also won the Cleveland Clinic Lerner Research Institute Award.
