5 Things to Know Today: Monday, May 23

Board of Education meeting, rock and roll, blood donations, thunder storms and the Boston Red Sox.

1) To prepare for bargaining sessions with the WTA and OAPSE, the convened for an executive session at the Westlake City Schools administrative building last Wednesday. For reference, during the board’s May 9 work session, Superintendent Dr. Dan Keenan and treasurer Mark Pepera proposed to cut operating expenses by $950,000 and Personnel by $1.12 million to counter the $2.1 million in proposed state funding losses that could hit the district during the 2011-12 school year. More will become known on the local level at tonight’s regular board meeting at the high school cafeteria where hundreds are expected to attend. 

2) The American Red Cross bloodmobile is coming to today and will set up in the Porter Room. For those who want to roll their sleeves up and help a good cause, come in anytime from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. For more information, call 440-871-2600. 

3) Women Who Rock: Vision, Passion, Power” is now open at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum. The exhibit runs all week, features two floors of exhibits and will honor 70 female artists who helped create and shape one of America’s favorite musical genres. Prices range from $22 for adults, $17 for senior citizens and $13 for children. Kids 8 and under go in free.

4) The good news is, it will reach 80 degrees in Westlake today. But the bad news is, there’s a 50 percent chance of scattered thunder storms hitting the area. So don’t forget the umbrella.

 5) After sweeping the Cincinnati Reds over the weekend at home, the Indians (29-15) will host the Boston Red Sox (25-21) tonight for a three-game series. First pitch is 7:05 p.m. at Progressive Field.
