Westlake’s Military Families Honored Including 3 Rooney Brothers

Seven new banners will be hung throughout Westlake.

Westlake Mayor Dennis Clough formally honored servicemen and their families at the last council meeting, lauding the seven young men, three of whom are brothers.

“One of our service employees wanted to recognize service personnel I active duty—those individuals that fight for our freedom to keep our country safe and aren’t afraid to give the ultimate sacrifice,” Clough said. “We hope that never happens, but we recognize that freedom really never is free.”

The banners, which are hung annually are made by the Westlake Service Department.

“These banners made by service department are hung throughout the  city to make sure citizens in the city recognize that we have people, right here, defending our country and serving in the military.

“We want to thank the families and those actually serving.”

Most servicemen were not present since they were currently serving, but had family members present.

Those honored were Senior Airman Andrew Adkins, U.S. Air Force, who surprised Clough with his presence; Lance Cpl. Nathan Chomoa; Lance Cpl. Kevin Midgley, U.S. Marine Corps; Senior Airmen Colton Rooney, U.S. Air Force; Lance Cpl. Brody Rooney, U.S. Marine Corps; Staff Sgt. Dylan Rooney, U.S. Air Force; and Ensign Nicholas David Smalley, U.S. Navy.

Clough said he often gets calls from other cities about how the program got started.

“We truly support those that defend this county and defend the freedoms we all enjoy here,” Clough said.

The banners can now be seen around Westlake, including one near City Hall.

The Rooneys represent three of four brothers serving concurrently. The lifelong residents and graduates of Westlake High School are Colton and Dylan Rooney (class of 2007) and Brody Rooney (class of 2011). The trio were featured in the Westlake/Bay Village Observer in April
