Westlake Officials Respond to Complaints Over Flooding Issues

Mike DelRegno, one of Westlake's residents affected by last winter's flooding, urged that the issue be resolved before the upcoming winter.

During Thursday’s regular meeting, resident Dave DelRegno stood to address his frustrations that stem from flooding issues in his Richmar Avenue neighborhood.

Last February, lots of water – created by the winter thaw – overwhelmed the Rocky River Treatment Plant and caused raw sewage to backflow into the basements of several Westlake homes.

Since then, residents and local officials have been working to find out whether or not the problem can be fixed to avoid future flood damage.

At the meeting, DelRegno wanted to know why the final report to identify the cause and possible solutions was not yet completed after six months.

Council members said they received a draft of the report from the treatment plant and its consultants, and are expecting the final report to be made available within the next week.

While DelRegno urged expedience, Mayor Dennis Clough asked for patience saying that reports like this take time because the plant serves five cities. When looking at possible solutions, all the communities must be taken into account to ensure that operational conflicts aren’t created.

“I understand what you’re saying, I don’t think you grasping my frustration with the timeliness of this,” DelRegno said. "At the very least, the draft should have been made available to the public.”

When the final report is completed, Westlake officials said they will post it on the city’s web site.
