New Commemorative Pathway Gives Residents Chance To Be Part Of History

Engraved bricks from the old Red Brick schoolhouse will be on sale through June.

Westlake residents have the chance to become part of history this summer by dedicating a brick in the city’s new Bicentennial Founder's Walk.

The Westlake Kiwanis Club and Westlake Historical Society are teaming up to sell bricks from the old Red Brick schoolhouse that was razed late last year. The bricks can be engraved and will be incorporated, along with others dedicated to Westlake's founding family, into the pathway.

The city will install the 100-foot-long walkway at Clague Park, just across the street from the Clague House Museum.

Each brick is $60 and can be engraved with up to three lines of text with a maximum of 13 spaces per line, said Westlake Kiwanis President Rick Grane, adding that residents can commemorate any person, group, family or organization as long as the message fits on the brick.

“Most proceeds will go to construction and labor,” he said. “That’s the majority of the cost.”

Grane said the team is aiming to install at the end of July, but the date of completion is not yet set in stone. Bricks will be on sale through June.

“The only thing we’re tentative on is the finishing date,” he said.

Grane said that so far, he has been getting a good response from people of all ages.

To purchase a brick, fill out the form found in the photo gallery on this site, visit the Kiwanis website or call Rick Grane at 440-829-0974. Bricks are also available on the Westlake Historical Society website through PayPal and forms will soon be at City Hall.
