Census 2010: Westlake Is Getting Older

Westlake's population is both growing and aging, according to detailed census data released Thursday by the U.S. Census Bureau. released in March revealed that while people were moving out of Cuyahoga County, they were moving into Westlake. New information shows that many of those new residents are raising the average age.

The typical Westlake resident was 45 in 2010, making them five years older than the average Ohioan, and since 2000, the elderly population has grown by more than 450 people.

The population under 5 years old has shrunk nearly 9 percent from 1,619 to 1,481, while the elderly population of those over 65 has grown by nearly the the same amount from 5,779 to 6,223.

Middle-aged residents, from 45 to 59, are also growing steadily, rising about 10 percent from 7,120 to 7,922.

The population of teenagers 15-19 years old, is staying pretty stable, growing a little more than 4 percent in the last 10 years. During the same time, the total population has increased by about 3 percent from 31,719 to 32,729.
